Reason for EKG?

Posted by Deneb on May 17, 2010, at 16:40:57

My pdoc, who is usually my therapist just went all medical doctor on me! Anyways, I have tremors and we are trying to treat them. Inderal LA 60 mg has not helped much and pdoc is thinking of going to 80 mg, but she wants to check to make sure my heart is OK first. She ordered an EKG for me and wants me to see my GP to get my heart rate and blood pressure. This is so weird because she usually gives me psychotherapy and isn't all medical doctor on me. It is comforting to know she is looking out for me medically too though.

I know propranolol lowers blood pressure, but why the EKG? Wouldn't just knowing my blood pressure be enough? Does propranolol worsen abnormal heart rhythms or something? I thought it did the opposite?

She said she is worried about making my blood pressure too low. I thought low was good as long as I don't faint?

I'm pretty sure I have orthostatic hypotension at times, but I don't think the propranolol gives me that.

Hi Deneb,

I don't think it's anything to worry about. I think she is just being cautious because you had the dizzy spells.

Not generally. One of its main effects is to slow the heart rate.

Oh OK, thanks Ed!

Pdoc said she doesn't think anything is wrong with my heart.

I don't even know where to get an EKG. :/

I'm going to call the hospital and ask.

I get an EKG every year as a routine part of my annual checkup -- it's done right in my GP's office by his nurse.
