Could even a small sub-clinical dose of 0.5mg lorazepam taken once daily for 10 weeks cause severe withdrawal symptoms is stopped suddenly?

Yes, potentially. 0.5mg is not sub-clinical by the way, it does have an effect.

Try taking tinier doses for a few weeks. Was it prescribed initially for panic and anxiety? Phillipa

It's difficult to do that with lorazepam due to the lack of availability of appropriate tablet strengths. I would recommend transferring from 0.5mg lorazepam to about 4mg (2 x 2mg tablets) of diazepam and then reducing slowly over a period of about 5 weeks eg. 4mg at night for one week, 3mg for one week, 2mg for one week, 1mg for one week, 0.5mg for one week then stop.
