I don't absorb some medications. Why??

Posted by rjlockhart04-08 on August 1, 2011, at 13:57:20

Ok the other day I took 100mg of Tylenol PM which is Diphenhydramine and felt nothing like it had no effect then I took another 100mg and it doesnt effect me at all. It USED to sedate me when I took it for allergies but it doesnt do anything anymore and what im worried about is if maybe this new medication Strattra is not being used or absorbed in my system and its basically a placebo effect.

See some meds like IBPROPEHN work. But other medications sometimes don't seem like there absorbed or even taking any action at all. One time I took 250mg of Diphendraimne to sleep and the only effect I got from it was nausea. No sleepiness feeling at all. It doesnt absorb into my system. I don't know how my system uses it because there is no effect what so ever with many medications that I take.

Anyone have anykind of explaination?? please I really would appricaite you imput!! thank you!!

Matt

I don't think it has anything to do with absorption. Whatever med you don't feel, the med just isn't hitting anything that you are going to feel. For example the antihistamine thing for sedation....past use of psych meds may have changed the sensitivity to that. It could also be drowned out by your current meds. A different med might be felt because it is working through a different mechanism that for whatever reason is a player in your biochemistry.

Who knows. Just off the top of my head. Poor absorption of one substance usually means poor absorption of everything.

But if you want to test the absorption theory, take the med under the tongue instead of swallowing it. Just let it dissolve under the tongue for about 5 minutes. It might taste like crap, maybe not, dunno, but the med will get straight into your blood system bypassing any absorption issues..

yes. and im very scared my strattera is not getting absorbed but like when I take my meds at night. Zyprexa and Clonodine I don't feel one thing. I used to be very sensitive to the sedation that Zyprexa gave and now it never happens anymore. I have to take like 10 clonodine's to even feel sedation. My dose is very low so that's the reason. My prozac is 60mg and i never feel any lift anymore like its pooped out on me.

I really thank you for your infomation because I need it because I have to understand how meds are working.
