An article about managing the metabolic effects of atypical antipsychotics, including a ranking from worst to best so far as weight gain and metabolic changes go.

Useful reading

Jono if these meds are intended for bipolar and schizophenia why are so many doctors prescribing them for anxiety? How can a docs fear of benzos compare to the long term harm from Antipsychotics? Makes no sense to me. Phillipa

Thanks to the war on drugs, theyre more afraid of benzo addiction than metabolic disorders, apparently. =(

I think these effects are less pronounced in the low doses that are use for anxiety and depression, though of course they are still there.

I think they are more widely used in non psychotic disorders in the US than they are in Australia (thats partly an insurance thing here, insurance will only cover these drugs for mania and schitzophrenia, not anxiety or depression, and they are damned expensive if you have to cover all the cost your self, where as a months worth of Valium or Xanax runs to maybe 10 dollars)

I guess they have a place - people with resistant depression, people with anxiety where benzos are contraindicated (addictive personalities etc) and where benzos just dont work.

At one point I took a low dose of risperidone, because despite high doses of Xanax and antidepressants, I was still getting bad anxiety and panic attacks, the 1mg of risperidone at night was the last piece of the jigsaw, it got me through a very difficult time, and I dont regret taking it.
