my dr recently added 15 mg of restoril relatively low-for insomnia to my 1.5 of klonopin seems to be working...he initially said ambien....but we decided on restoril because i believe my insomnia is due more to anxiety....any one ever use it

Restoril (temazepam) works best for sleep maintenance (middle insomnia). It is not as good to help one fall asleep (initial insomnia). I like it because it does not produce a hangover.

I wonder why I've never been given that as four hours into sleep is when I wake as have no trouble falling to sleep. Is it harder to get than the benzos I take? Maybe that is what I need? Phillipa

You may have to increase the dosage upwards to compensate for the development of tolerance. I doubt that the drugs will lose effectiveness, though. As far as addiction is concerned, temazepam is probably less addictive than clonazepam or alprazolam. I don't think one usually comes to crave temazepam. Physiological dependence is likely to develop, though, requiring a gradual taper when discontinuing.

Temazepam is the usualy sleep med in Australia, Ambien got a bad reputation here due to episodes of "sleep driving" and stuff.
It is more slowly adsorbed than other drugs, so you need to take it an hour before bedtime if you need help getting to sleep.
It generaly helps keep you asleep all night, and causes no hangover (in the Fauklands war british pilots would take 10-20mg of temazepam, sleep for 8 hours, then fly supersonic jets off of aircraft carriers)
Philipa, ask your doctor for a script, it might be just what you need.
An alternative for you might be to ditch your Valium and take say 15-30mg of Tranxene at bedtime, this would help you sleep through the night, and also keep you calm and relaxed throughout all the next day.
What benzo are you on now, and what dose?

Jono taking l0mg of valium and .25 of xanax at bedtime but part of the l0 of valium I take when wake about four hours after falling asleep no problem with that now. With the years of waking usually four hours after falling asleep wonder why restoril was never suggested? Tranxene took once and it was going from valium to a very low dose of tranxene and it didn't hold me so asked for the ativan was then taking was in hospital and starting luvox and had just also found out had hasmimotos. Thanks for this info. Phillipa ps how much tanxene would you substitue for the above?

Philipa, ask your doc for a trial of chlorazepate (tranxene), 15 - 22.5mg half an hour before bedtime....give it a few days to build up in the body..... it might not be any better than Valium, but it might be just what you need?

I have used it before. It did help me sleep, but the sleep was more intense--similar to what I experienced on Remeron--very vivid dreams, almost like the sleep you get with a fever. And I was groggier the next morning. I ended up using Xanax nightly instead. I'm not sure why the benzos feel so different, but they do.
