Sam-e as an adjunct to zoloft?

Posted by mogger on December 13, 2011, at 12:30:08

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone has ever heard of Sam-e being added to anti depressants as an adjunct. I know if says do not take with MAOI's on the side of the box but it doesn't mention other anti depressants. I have seen one study where it has been used as an adjunct successfully but wonder if anyone has had experience with it. Thanks,

Joseph

If it was me Id probably try small doses and work my way up. But Id say ask your doc just to be safe. Perhaps they might suggest adding an NRI to zoloft for an extra boost?

There was a small study in Boston about a year or two ago where high dose SAMe was added to celexa/lexapro patients. The results were significantly helpful with few if any side effects or complications.

Thank you bleauberry,

You wouldn't happen to have a link to that study by chance as i can't find it and would like to print it out and show it to my pdoc? Thanks,

Joseph

yes I use 1,600mg/day SAMe with cymbalta and busbar and it really helped me. I works as good as perscription AD on me. It's just so expensive and it too poops out in 3-6 weeks. I use it to manage AD poop out. My thinking is that it may work by preventing down regulation or just create more seritonin, I don't really know but I know it works well on me.

tried Sam-e with my pdocs permission and it caused some intense anxiety even at 50mgs. However I am on

125mg zoloft
45mg remeron
50mg buspar
1.5mg klonopin

So the added serotonin or norepinephrine with the sam-e could be taking my regime out of control.
