Worth trying Zoloft?

Posted by jerseygal111 on March 29, 2012, at 17:13:51

I was on prozac for 10 years before it pooped out on me. Then I tried lexapro, pristiq, and viibryd with no luck. Also, added zyprexa to try to get a response. The latest meds that I'm on are remeron (mostly for sleep), klonopin for anxiety, zyprexa and lamictal. My pdoc thought lamictal might be helpful as he thinks I may have signs of bipolar. I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile to try meds that I haven't tried yet like zoloft and cymbalta. My pdoc thinks that, if the others failed, these wouldn't work either. I'd like to know if others have had a similar experience.

People disagree on this, but my p-doc seems to feel the same way. If one SSRI doesn't work, it's not likely that another SSRI will work. He doesn't see the point in trying one after another. Similarly, if an SNRI doesn't work, he will not keep trying others. He did go through the whole gamut of AAPs with me, but that's because most did work and work well, but made me gain tons of weight. We kept looking for one that might work and not make me gain weight. (Didn't find one unfortunately).

The exception to this was with MAOI's. Ensam did nothing for me. A lot of doctors with extensive experience with MAOI's don't have a high regard for ensam. But we tried parnate and that made me feel better within days.

If your PDOC is recommending Lamictal first off, I would take him at his word.

Medications don't poop out, symptoms just get worse.

I'm a fan of Zoloft; its helped my depression more than any other drug, including SSRIs. I did have a positive few months on Zoloft plus Lamictal. There aren't too many downsides to trying either, unless you have significant reactions to the more activating SSRIs.
