Sertraline, Wellbutrin and Methylphenidate

Posted by Exisessentialist on May 29, 2012, at 14:35:28

Hi, all. I've been taking nortriptyline 100 mg, Sertraline 200 mg and Tryptophan 8 g for about two weeks as a combination. The sertraline and tryptophan I've been on for a couple of months but nortriptyline was a recent addition, though I've been on it at lower doses titrating up for 8 weeks. I haven't noticed much in terms of antidepressant effect with the addition of the nortriptyline yet. I'm still thinking of giving it two more weeks just to ensure that I'm giving it a fair chance but I'm also considering medication options if it doesn't alleviate things greatly in the next two weeks. I've been thinking of transitioning off tryptophan and nortriptyline while remaining on the sertraline and adding methylphenidate and wellbutrin. I've had a positive response to wellbutrin twice in the past, though I had to discontinue it a few years ago believing that it was causing me hypertension, though it was more likely a result of chronic use of phenylephrine for severe sinus pain that just wouldn't abate. Any thoughts on dosages or transition protocol for these medications? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Wellbutrin is not vary strong on the dopamine uptake centers or whatever you call them....but it does provide some behavioral changes in depressed people who have low motivation...adding Ritilin maybe...it would give you more a focus effect, depending on the dosages your on. Wellbutrin at 450mg is similar to 5-10mg of adderall, but not quite. Check out Concerta and maybe Aplenzin [new form of wellbutrin].

I'd just add methylphenidate. I got a mood elevating response @ 30mgs. If your doc opts for amphetamine, you might get a good response with a lower dose.

Thanks for the responses. Would it be safe to add themethylphenidate to the nortriptyline, sertraline and tryptophan? I'm considering ditching the tryptophan regardless but just want to ensure I'm being safe with whatever medications I'm taking. My.psychiatrist wants to try an MAOI but I'd rather exhaust the possibilities from all other classes first. Maybe I'm just being cowardly.

I'd drop 1 AD and the tryptophan. Then again...I'm not a doc.

I get wanting to use an MAOI, but man...Ritalin works faster. And its safer.
