For the past 20 plus years, only the MAOIs seem to have helped me with depression. A few months back my psychiatrist and I decided to augment the Nardil at 82.5 mgs daily with dextroamphetamine. I started with 2.5 mgs daily, but when I got to 7.5 mgs daily a couple of months later, I became manic and about a month and a half later needed to be hospitalized. Does anybody think it is safe to go back on an MAOI? I am not taking a mood stabilizer at this time and in fact I am on a Wellbutrin-Prozac combination but it does not seem to be doing much. . .

After a washout I think it would be safe to go back on an MAOI. Sadly, after you stopped the Prozac, you'd have to endure a 5 wk washout b/c Prozac has such a LONG half life. One good thing: due to Prozac's long half-life you could probably just stop it cold turkey and it would self-wean itself. But if an MAOI is the only thing that works it would probably be worth it to go through that long washout. And, of course, you would need to talk with your pdoc about it all. I can sympathize; Prozac used to be my wonder drug, but now it does squat for me. And I've endured that 5 wk washout before, b/c I knew an MAOI was probably the only answer. Now Nardil is my wonder drug, and I just hope it doesn't poop out on me like the Prozac did. Good luck!
My best,
Kat

Thanks Kat, you also responded to the "pleasant dreams" post by myself, so I am unwilling to throw the Prozac out yet. It's really great that you're having a great response to Nardil. I could have gone back to it, but for some reason its gassiness and weight gain have really turned me off it for good. Thanks again!

At first I wondered about the contents of this post as above looked all positive. Stick with what is working for you. And no diet restrictions!!! Phillipa

Could you drop the wellbutrin and try Ritalin augmentation of your Prozac, maybe with a mood stabilizer and/or low dose AAP in the mix?

I would not start an MAOI without a mood stabilizer. I'm suprized you haven't become manic on the Wellbutrin/Prozac.
