Clonazepam/Alprazolam dose equivelence

Posted by jono_in_adelaide on October 19, 2012, at 18:04:08

Some sources suggest that 1mg of clonazepam is = to 1mg of alprazolam, others suggest that it is 0.5mg of clonazepam that is = to 1mg of alprazolam

Any suggestions as to which might be closer to the truth?

I'm thinking of asking my doctor about switching from alprazolam to clonazepam because of its longer half life, so less interdose rebound anxiety etc, and want to get my numbers right.

Jono 1mg of ativan =.5mg of klonopin. At least this is always what I was told. Also there is an equivalency chart on babble. Phillipa

And i think 1mg of Xanax = 1mg of Ativan, so maybe 0.5mg of Klonopin does = 1mg of Xanax.

Ugh, its all so hard lol

my experiences with these drugs is that they are two different animals and equivalancy is not a factor. xanax is meant to get you high and i read a chart that said its anxiolytic effect is lower than clonazepams 3 stars for clon 2 for xan.
clonazepam is more of an antiseziure at heart and stablizes your mood as opposed to getting you high and is probably better for true panic attacks in my *cough*humble opinion
dont get me wrong i like xanax but just to get manic ;)

It's never done this to me just relaxed me. Same as other benzos minus klonopin Phillipa

I've never taken any benzo to get high, merely to releive anxiety. I have never felt the same sort of buz from them as I do from alcohol, and i have never taken more than directed - i think once I excede that 3 tablets per day limit, its a slippery slope till you're Elvis

Here is a source I found that lists equipotent dosages in ranges: https://tdm.pharm.buffalo.edu/pic/get_drug_information_paper.php?attachment_id=75

It's a pdf.

To me by the way, 1mg of ativan feels stronger than 1mg of klonopin, which goes against charts, but everybody is different.

BTW, I'm not 100 percent sure but I think the purpose of benzodiazepine charts is for tapering.

Klonopin is more potent than Ativan for instance, like 2x as much, but, I don't think this means that its anxiolytic effect will be twice as strong.

The 1=1 ratio of clonazepam to alprazolam is not true.

It stems from Erwoid.org claiming this for some time (still does). That's what happens when you get your information from drug addicts instead of peer-reviewed literature.

Medscape is peer-reviewed, and my Medscape app on my iPad has a dose conversion for the benzos, and it's 1mg of Clonazepam = 2 mg alprazolam.

I had a doctor switch me from Klonopin to Xanax once, and he said it was what medscape said, but I was insistent, stupidly, because I thought I knew what I was talking about, not knowing erowiod is full of &%#@. So I was on an inadequate dose of Xanax XR that did nothing for me that month I was on it, and even had a panic attack (and I don't get panic attacks, I have social anxiety disorder).

Yes, xanax is twice as potent.
