magnetic seizure therapy

Posted by gilmourr on February 16, 2013, at 18:29:40

I remember some people wanted to hear about results of my magnetic seizure therapy trial. I'll be starting on wednesday and will continue until the depression is gone or I max out of sessions.

Hope to bring positive results :)

I hope you do, too.

I think people will be interested to know how you experience the treatments and what side effects they have, if any. I look forward to reading your desciptions.

Have you read the work of Sarah Lisanby?

Good luck.

No I haven't. I've just read literature from the doctor that is performing this. He has about 6-7 published journals on MST.

Do you know of any more journals from the doctor you named? I'm always interested to read more.

I really hope this works. I need to get back to school/work and stuff.

I mention Dr. Lisanby because her areas of interest encompass all types of brain stimulation therapies, including MST. She co-authors a great many papers.

I hope you get to do stuff real soon!

#1 down. The whole procedure took about 10 minutes I think? Took me about 5 minutes to feel 75% normal, then an hour to feel probably 100% normal. Or for the anathesia/muscle relaxant to fully wear off.

No side effects. I think anything I experience today would just be placebo so I'll wait a few sessions to comment on the effect.

The general anathesia/muscle relaxant was trippy though, but in a good way. Kind of felt like an avalanche and being buried in snow (but like passed out). Then waking up the next second in the recovery room.

The staff was great that performed this procedure as well.

My next post will probably be in 3-4 sessions since I don't expect huge changes between each seizure.

#2 treatment - a lot of nausea after, hardcore migraine for 36 hours straight, nothing helped.

#3 treatment - very very little amounts of nausea, no headache so far (2 hours after it now). Though when I was under I felt like I was suffocating/kinda like drowning which was a first. I think it may had to do with the anesthetic wearing off before the muscle relaxant.

thanks for the follow-up. i know nothing about this kind of therapy. you may have said it already, but is it like an updated/refined/enhanced ECT? are you supposed to feel relief from depression immediately or soon after? and, how long does the remission supposedly last? is it covered by insurance? and it's outpatient, no? sorry, i'm just curious...

hope you're doing well.

Yeah exactly, it's basically like ECT (induces seizures) but subtracts the memory loss side effects. You usually feel the impact if it works between 6-12 treatments I believe. I just finished my third like I said, so I'll be done my 5th at the end of this week.

Basically, if you achieve remission, you most likely will either go back on meds to make sure u don't fall back into depression, or you can do less and less maintenance. Like 1 treatment every 2 weeks for a month, then once a month, then once every 3 months.

I personally want to do about 12-15 of these and then go on a low dose of Nardil and see if I can manage my life like that. This is outpatient and it's a clinical study so it's fully subsidized.

and I really won't know how well it's working until I enter my dangerously low level of zoloft which is around 0-50 mg. That's when I become severely depressed (or every single time in the past).

I think I forgot to post #4, 5 and 6.

Two of them were very manageable, while the 5th one was horrible. It seems like every 3rd seizure I feel like absolute sh*t afterwards.

Weight and body temperature seem to be getting better which is a good sign. As for my mood, I'm not going to pretend, I really don't feel any different. I like that I'm putting on weight and I think it may be a precursor to a change in my mood, so we'll see.

The seizures also are beginning to wear me out. It's not the greatest feeling, but I keep reminding myself that I really need to see this through because my head is pretty messed up. And I need to get back to school and work.

I believe the drugs I use are methohexital, succinylcholine, ondasteron for each procedure. If you don't respond well to methohexital I believe they give you ketamine instead.
