Assistance, please, with possible TD

Posted by Beckett on June 22, 2014, at 15:21:58

My tongue is rolling to the left, and my back jaw is clenched. I barely open my mouth when I speak, and I feel a downward pull from the sides of my mouth though this is not visible. I realized yesterday this could be a mild TD. But I am not taking an AP.

Could lithium cause this? I've taken it about 1 1/2 years, first at 900 mg, then 750 mg., and now 600 mg. I have tremors and jerks in my hands and fingers and have difficulty writing and keyboarding. Besides the lithium, I take 200 mg. Lamictal (for about 6-8 months). And Lyrica 600 mg. (for about six months).

Internet research says Lithium definitely, but prescription inserts list TD as rare side effects with Lyrica and Lamictal.

Of course I'm calling my doctor tomorrow and my pdoc. Anyone with information or experience. (I'm a little freaked out.)

And I don't blame you. I can only offer support on this. Please post what doc says tomorrow. Can you take benadryl see if it helps? I don't know throwing things out. Phillipa

Thank you rj for the link. I spoke to my doctor, and he'll call me back. He says either lowering the lamictal or the lithium. I wouldn't mind reducing the lamictal because of word retrieval problems.

Hi Jeron,

Lamictal produced TD? I'm sorry you have it. It's mild, you say? I read lamictal can produce TD as a rare side effect. Maybe it's because I take them combined(?)

I dunno...anticonvulsants can cause td, but I think its rare, at least compared to the neuroleptics (old and new).

Maybe antioxidants? I know, hippy health food store stuff, right? There's not a whole lot of conventional treatments for TD, so antioxidants are often a good idea. I do Orthomolecular to prevent TD.

If I recall correctly, a cocktail used in an open study from the late 60s into the early 80s used a couple grams each of c and niacinamide (b3), plus a b-complex and about 800 IU E. They reported an extremely low rate of TD, and some of the patients were on long term treatment with more than one old school antipsychotic, plus whatever else they threw in the mix.

Just a thought. Good luck!

I discontinued the Li and am feeling better. No twitching and the tongue roll thing might be a nervous tic. When stressed it 'happens' along with some bruxism. I do feel better with out the Li. I had no idea.

Thanks, and CE, thank you for the information.

It doesn't sound like TD. TD involves more repetitive muscle movements.
