Can I take Nardil together with Abilify?

Posted by chinaboy on June 26, 2014, at 5:24:47

Hi, everyone! I've been on internet-bought Nardil for a while and felt it triggered mood swings.

My Pdoc recommended Abylify, but I'm hesitant. Nardil works on Dopamine, Abilify also works on Dopamine.I'm confused and wonder if they contradict or potentiate each other?

Thanks in advance! Any opinion would be appreciated!

There's absolutely no contraindication. Abilify "lowers dopamine in some areas and increases it in other areas," depending on your individual brain chemistry and situational context. But it's not the dopamine you need to worry about (unless you have psychosis issues but either way Abilify is not that prodopamine like e.g. amphetamines) with MAOIs and other meds, it's the serotonin and norepineprhine -- although many noradrenergic and some serotonergic drugs can be combined with MAOIs (most except all SSRIs/SNRIs/ clompramine and imipramine/ eprineprhine/ dextromethorphan/ pethidine, etc.).

Good luck. I'm on Abilify with an MAOI too.

Thank you for your reply and input! Now I understand it is alright to take the two together,

My situation is I felt Nardil triggered hypomania after some normal time of use.

can you tell me the dose for that condiition?

Thank you in advance!

Another question is I know Abilify can augment antidepressants. But at a higher (say 15-30mg)will the augmentation effect be lost?

will the augmentation effect be lost at high dose?

My short answer to both questions is that it is highly individual. The typical target dose for bipolar mania is 15mg although many do well with 10mg or lower. I am on 9mg which is working great for me. Are you bipolar or on other meds/ mood stabilizers?

The second question, again it's an individual thing... some can take 30mg with augmentation/ no worsening of depression whereas for me I flattened out and my depression got worse when I went above 10mg. But I believe it's different when used for bipolars in higher doses vs. augmentation for unipolar depression, which is lower doses typically 1-5mg. Some seem to think that Abilify has different action at lower doses vs. high does, where lower doses are said to be more prodopaminergic/ stimulating which fades or remains and is joined by a stabilizing effect as the dose goes up. It's a tricky med. Stimulating, sedating, or both, depends on you and the dose.

I take 30mgs/Abilify plus other stuff. Uber-Bipolar, apparently.

Anyway, lower doses can be somewhat stimulating. Hit 10mgs or so, it turns into a full on antipsychotic. 15 is the target dose, 20 and 30 are more calming, but I wouldn't exactly call it sedating...I dunno.

I think Abilify is just a really clean antipsychotic. MAOIs are commonly combined with antipsychotics, probably more Parnate than Nardil, but still....

...I'm fairly certain its safe.

Hi,friend:

There is something extremely strange about me. Be it Litium, Carmazepine, or Lamictal, they all cause anger and agitation. It seems only antidepressants can ease them (but the antidepressants cause excessive compulsive behavior).

Today I increase Abilify to 30mg and took Nardil 45mg and am feeling very good!

Thank you for reading my message and also I want to know the mood stablizer and anger thing.
