I went to the pharmacy today to pick up my refill of the Parnate. This would be now be the second or third time I've had it refilled and had always requested the brand (and my insurance always paid for it, since there isn't too much of price difference between the brand and generic).
However, the pharmacist told me today that the brand had been discontinued and that from now on, only the generic would be available.
So I called Glaxo-Smith and asked them whether Parnate had in fact been discontinued and the rep told me that it had not been; it is absolutely still being manufactured.
So anyway, I called the pharmacy and told them that they're mistaken and the pharmacist is going to check and get back to me. I think that their distributer essentially ran out of the med and doesn't want to have to bother with re-ordering the brand version, since they have the generic stock. At least that's what I suspect.
But in the meantime, can I be 100% positive that there's no difference between the brand and the generic versions?
I guess I've been reading about a similar flap with regard to Nardil on this board and am a bit concerned since the Parnate (the brand version) seems to be working for me.

See my post and follow-up posts just a little above this; Same thing happened to me the other day; I got the generic with my refill, and I never had the generic before. I thought it was a mistake and some other type of pill, but my husband told me the pharmacy said it was the generic Parnate. I will try it out to see what I think.

Sounds exactly like that nardil thread did when the pharmacies said only in generic. Love Phillipa

The generic has been around a lil bit now, however glaxco is still providing the brand,if your pharmscist refuses it,make a fuss i did,and with a min or so call they should be able to provide you with the brand.
As for the generic, unlike nardil the differance is mostly not affecting the drug,is i believe mostly part of the sugar coating inactive layer of the outside layer/

I have been taking the generic version for a few months now and there really is no difference. I tend to be very sensitive to small changes in dosages or when trying new drugs, but the generic really is exactly the same as the brand name.

In Oregon, Kaiser told me the same thing. That Parnate was no longer manufactured. I also called Glaxo Klien Smith and found it was still manufactured. I was livid, since the generic is completely ineffective for me.They immediately 'found some' Parnate and continued to fill my prescriptions. What's up with this?
