Elevated white blood cells

Posted by Tomatheus on August 19, 2014, at 1:23:34

I still think that correcting my elevated white blood cell count is going to be the key to overcoming my chronic fatigue, assuming that I am going to overcome this horrific aspect of my illness. White blood cells produce hydrogen peroxide, and many of the medications and supplements that I've found to be effective (albeit temporarily) have worked by reducing hydrogen peroxide levels. I've tried addressing the elevated white blood cell count by taking an antibiotic (Zithromax) and by taking high-dose olive leaf extract for several weeks. With the exception of a brief improvement in symptoms immediately after starting olive leaf extract, neither the antibiotic nor the olive leaf extract produced any reduction in my symptoms. My chronic fatigue began after I subjected myself to partial sleep deprivation over a prolonged period, and I don't think it's a coincidence that I happen to have elevated white blood cells and that sleep deprivation activates the immune system. I think that what I need is an immunosuppressant of sorts. Any ideas?

Since the white blood count has many components which is elevated. Some for infections, some for allergy. It seems strange that all would be elevated. What does your doc say could it be mono? Phillipa

The white blood cell test that was done most recently was part of a "CBC, No Differential/Platelet" test. I had 11.9 x10E3/uL, with a reference interval of 4.0 - 10.5. There was no specification as to which white blood cells were elevated.

When I was in the ER most recently, my white blood cell count also came back high, and they did a number of extra tests after that, only to conclude that they couldn't find any sign of infection. I've also gone in to a regular doctor's office, only to be turned away because all of my symptoms seemed to be of a psychiatric nature. I'll try to bring this up at my upcoming psychiatrist's appointment, but I'm not confident that he'll respond appropriately.

Do you get copies of your blood work? I do and can see where I am in each of the parameters, no allergies, no infections. etc. Phillipa

I received a copy of the report from when I had my blood drawn after visiting an orthomolecular treatment center.

The result was as I indicated in my previous message. There were no parameters listed. Just "WBC" with a result of 11.9 x10E3/uL. The "CBC, No Differential/Platelet" test also included figures for RBC, Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, MCV, MCH, MCHC, and RDW. All of those figures came back normal, except for my white blood cells, which were elevated.

Since each means something different I wonder why it wasn't broken down?

Thanks for the link, Phillipa.

I think that maybe I need to get a "CBC with differential" test (as opposed to the "CBC no differential" test I got) to get it broken down by types of white blood cells. I'll try asking my psychiatrist when I see him if he'd want to order such a test. If he doesn't, maybe I'll see a general doctor and see if I can get the test done.

I think so too. As you may be normal now also and have been fighting off a virus or with the allergy season had basophils or neutrophils elevated always confuse the two allergy ones. It would be the lymphocytes and monocytes that would be the scavengers with infection. Good luck. Phillipa

That could be useful. Bear in mind some medications elevate the white cell count, notably corticosteroids eg. prednisolone (or prednisone) and lithium salts. (Neutrophils are the type of white cell elevated by these two drugs).
