Dopamine Agonists for SSRI Sexual Dysfunction

Posted by Rayray on October 16, 2014, at 21:14:35

Does anyone have experience treating SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction with dopamine agonists? I know there have been completed studies with Requip, but don't know what the results were. I'd like to know what is safe, effective, and could be used on an as-needed basis. Is this wishful thinking?

Thanks,

Ray

Yohimbe is a good aphrodisiac. For dysfunction, nothing beats Viagra.

Abilify is a partial agonist of dopamine (DA) receptros. Someone recently suggested using Abiify to modulate prolactin secretion. I'm thinking that it might help with sex-drive, too. It's just a thought. You might want want to research it. I don't like DA full agonists. I think that they are too unpredictible. You might end up falling asleep suddenly in the middle of a hand of blackjack.

Wellbutrin?

Buspirone?

Thanks Scott and Eric. I am actually on Wellbutrin 150mg 2xd and have been so for years. It's effect on me was never pronounced, and I cannot use it alone.

I tried Yohimbe a long time ago, but am concerned about its BP effect since I have kidney disease. Viagra was also a long time ago. I really prefer Levitra and Cialis. Although they address ED issues, none of them perked up my libido or what seems like a bit of anhedonia. Of course, age is catching up, too. I'm 64 now.

I'll talk to my pdoc about Abilify and Requip when I see him.

Thanks for the advice!

Ray

Problem with Viagra, Cialis and the like is they can cause blindness and deafness. Although rare, a high price to pay. Horny goat weed is an alternative containing compounds similar to PDE5, which may be better, worse or same risk as PDE5

I've found the following supplements to be great benefit:

ginseng
Mega Men (GNC product)
ginko biloba
pumpkin seed oil
bee pollen

Thanks for the tip. I've worked successfully with the PDE5 inhibitors. What I'm looking for suggestions about are the libido and difficult ejaculation aspects. I spoke with my pdoc earlier in the week and he felt he did not know enough about Requip to prescribe it.

Another possible med is an old serotonin-antagonist antihistamine called cyproheptadine (Periatic). Have anyone here ever tried that one?

Best Regards,

Ray

I tried it. Made me feel so doped up, blunted, depressed, lethargic that I could not function. Reminded me of Buspar, or an atypical anti-psychotic. But not everyone responds the same.

Did it do anything for the sex drive, or did you take it for something else? I was wondering about using it as a one-shot dose from time to time.
