I see lots of people on Depakote and wondered whats the deal? My doc put me on it today. I'm to increase to 1200mg. He also said it dont do much itself for anxiety but may boost the Klonopin and phenelzine...Strange. So what is it about it that makes people take it for mental health?
Thanks

i dunno. i was briefly on it for my form of madness, until the blood levels went almost toxic. that was the end of the magic for me.
do you have bipolar i or schizoaffective? its your body, your life, but...i wouldn't personally take it 'off label,' or for less severe problems.

my doc is just worried how id handle the washout. all i need is 10days of cortisone. which is a way of blasting depression away but its very addictive so use simply for the transition period. If I had my way I would take a hospital bed for 2 weeks. Would feel alot safer but thats like winning the lotery- it don't happen lol

Why did you choose Parnate and not Nardil?
Have you ever tried imipramine?
Do you ever have panic attacks?

If you read the signature you'll see I'm already taking Nardil 120mg. on it 14mths now. Never been on Parnate but I'm keen to give it a try.

Sorry. Your signature was hidden for some reason. 120 mg/day is as high as I have seen anyone go with Nardil. I tried it myself. Certainly, people who failed to respond to Nardil have gone on to respond to Parnate.
What are the pharmacologies of acamprosate and galantamine that you feel are important?
Thanks.

> - ScottOk. Galantamine being an Alzheimers med, I love it's nootropic effect. Similar but stronger than the Racetams. It is known to cause extreme lucid dreaming so I take mine when I wake ! Then With the help of amitryptyline I sleep sound and the galantamine helps me 'wake up' outa bed. And its free ;)
Acamprosate are for my long standing alcoholism. I take 2g per day and I've forgotten about drink. Even if I drink it takes the 'satisfaction' away. So there's no point really. I may be on it for years. Controls that side of me so i think its a good'un
So say, it isn't thought to have a psychoactive effect but works on calcium channels. Or something...

depakote valproate - main med for seizures, but they use for mood stabilization in mood swings, it effects the GABA receptors and increases them, not sure the mechanism, but it's not in the way that benzo's enhance GABA, but adding depakote to benzos yes it does enhance it because it potentiates GABA levels, besides that .. depakote isnt really a depression med, its mainly for mania and mood swings. It's a well-known med that used alot....i've been on depakpte twice at psych, it just subtle calms, not like benzos do

There is some evidence that valproate can be effective for treatment resistant anxiety. It blocks sodium / calcium channels, reduces PKC (excitatory neurotransmission) and increases gaba via inhibition of gaba transaminase (an enzyme which metabolizes gaba).
I found that it was good for anxiety. Lower doses seemed to be more effective for me.
