I've read where this is becoming a street drug to replace opiods any truth to this.....never used it never will...curious as I have a friend I think may be abusing it

I read something like that, too. Would explain why the shrink at the clinic is suddenly acting odd about my prescription (low dose, as needed; 100mgs at a time...). Anyway...
its -still- not a controlled substance. doses in psych indication vary wildly, from my very low doses up to (I think...) 1800+ mgs/day, every day.
I never much liked it. The last shrink prescribed it because I hate hydroxyzine with a passion. Back in the day, I had a friend who would swipe mine, and she'd get stoned and pop the gabapentin. She swore up and down it was the best thing ever. I didn't get it back then, still don't today.

I've heard it can reduce opioid tolerance / withdrawal. I don't know how abusable it is on its own. It can be misused, but I don't think there are the as many risks as opoids.
Its unfortunate that the junkies need to make good meds harder to access for legitimate health issues.

Neurontin and Lyrica are now used recreationally with pretty high frequency. They are very widely abused in prison.
I suspect both with be controlled more in future.

Anything that is half way enjoyable ends up being labelled as a drug of abuse.
We are not supposed to enjoy treatment perhaps.
It's a pretty minor enjoyment, but here people sell Seroquel. People can sleep safe knowing that it is not enjoyable, although I haven't tried it and don't know.
You get a dispensation with a terminal diagnosis, which is nice, but a bit soft. In Russia a former admiral with cancer was waiting for the fifth signature necessary on his narcotic script. He lost patience and blew his brains out.

Everything is abused in prison :)
Seroquel is a hot prison item. I can't imagine anything worse than using Seroquel 'recreationally' (?)

Ketamine is showing promise for previously untreatable TRD, restoring mood to people in a short timeframe.
However, ketamine has abuse potential.
So, what?
As long as a patient isn't escalating the dose, I don't see any issue.
We give ritalin to 5 year olds and we panic about the abuse potential of neurontin?
