Way back they gave people with mental health issues a mild form of malaria out of desperation.

Blood letting. The word "desperation" certainly applies.

There are some reports of spontaneous remission from schizophrenia symptoms during an infection. Perhaps the immune activation increased glutamate or something. Of course, relapse occurred after the infection was over.

To me, there is still desperation in psychiatry. Those meds available are pretty hardcore in terms of side effects. I responded to some stuff, but the side effects were worse than the problem I tried to treat. Sometimes much worse.

I agree. I am finding SSRIs more and more intolerable over time.
In recent years, anxiety and sadness are gone. My main symptoms have been fatigue and apathy. SSRIs have just made this worse.
Unfortunately, trying to explain this to my doctor is a waste of time. I am not seeing a psychiatrist at the moment. My doctor would just want to ramp up the dose of antidepressant which would just make things worse.
