I hear that hormone deficiencies can cause bad mood etc. I don't know how common they are. Has anyone ever been there?

>No, but I remember you said you had low testosterone, and that you were going to supplement it, before you changed your mind.
Another hormone deficiency that can produce some symptoms of depression is thyroid. I don't know about cortisol.

What I am focused on now is human growth hormone. I just have this idea that in my case many things can be fixed with non psychiatric means. Ontop, my psychiatrist, who I am sure is good, doesnt think I should try any more meds. I have tried alot and now I got the best meds for me, but I am not in remission.

Well, most of the time it is within the reference range, but not very far. I will probably do it as I age, but right now it is maybe not worth the hassle.

Yeah, If it is out of whack Thyroid can cause psychiatric symptoms. My neighbor told me. She probably would have been sent to a ward if they hadnt figured out it is thyroid.

I've seen an endocrinologist for years now for hashimotos Thyroiditis. I take synthroid. I see him every 6 months for labs and adjustment in thyroid meds. Phillipa

Yep...as I had very low testosterone levels, which we think were caused by a combo of high dose Prozac, Zyprexa, and Risperdal. My pituitary gland was not producing any follicle-stimulating hormone or luteinizing hormone, required for testosterone production. You should get a full round of tests, then bring them to your endocrinologist. Your GP usually looks them over with a 'general' perspective, while the endo will scrutinize more. (Usually). Look up your endo's review on google.
Best,

Unfortunately, in Germany, civilians have a hard time ordering tests. I need to convince a doctor to do it.

Pretty idiotic, right? You could think: I wonder what my XYZ blood value is. Not in Germany. In thrall of doctors.

Let me reformulate: Has anyones mental state been bettered by an endocrinologist with non thyroid issues?

Didn't someone here mention testosterone for men to help address the dysphoria that comes from low testosterone? I guess estrogens would be similar for women.
Check out allopregnanolone. I guess you can call it a type of hormone treatment. allogregnanolone is a relative and precursor of progesterone, and can act as a neurosteroid. Actually, progesterone by itself can be depressogenic. The new Sage compounds, the first of which (brexanolone), was approved by the FDA to treat postpartum depression. It has to be given i.v. All three allopregnanolone analogs are actually a type of progestogen neurosteroid. They act as positive allosteric modulators that amplify the signaling of GABA-A receptors. I guess you could call it an indirect agonist. The next of the series scheduled to be approved is zuranolone. Unlike brexanolone, zuranolone is taken orally. Sage is trying to get zuranolone approved for Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Depression, and Postpartum Depression. These are indeed novel.
