...researchers tested this group of antihistamines for their ability to inhibit the coronavirus in a combination of human and primate cells. Three of the drugs -- hydroxyzine, diphenhydramine and azelastine -- showed direct, statistically significant antiviral effects on the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Hydroxyzine, sold as Atarax, and the nasal spray azelastine are prescription medications while diphenhydramine is sold over-the-counter as Benadryl, a treatment for cold and allergy symptoms.
The drugs were tested at different concentrations to measure how much is required to inhibit the virus.
Among the three medications, azelastine was found to inhibit the SARS-CoV-2 virus at a dose that was smaller than the amount prescribed as a nasal spray. The other two antihistamines required higher drug concentrations than currently recommended dosing levels to achieve antiviral activity in cells. That doesn't make diphenhydramine any less of a potential COVID-19 therapy for now, especially considering its ubiquity and over-the-counter status, Ostrov said.
Reznikov said the data suggest these three antihistamines may work by either disrupting the virus's interactions with ACE2 or by binding with another protein that may interfere with viral replication. The protein, known as a sigma receptor, is part of a cell's communications network.

The prescription antihistamine nasal spray azelastine might be a better choice than diphenhydramine, since it has been shown to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 virus replication at a lower dose.

Fluvoxamine also has some effect on reducing death from COVID.

It appears that the MMR vaccine, Tdap vaccine, Shingrix shingles vaccine and especially the BCG vaccine (for tuberculosis) can add to the protection given by the Covid vaccines by eliciting cross-reactive T cells that mitigate Covid.

What about healthy Vitamin D levels? Do they help? I am an orthomolecular freak. I rarely get sick. Haven't in years.

I have fluvoximine also been on it for years but only taking 12.5mg per day but have it still studying it for Covid then? Phillipa

Yes. I have been vaccinated (waiting for booster), but it never hurts to have some additional tools.

My mother went into long term care this past summer. We're not exactly sure what initiated the decline. Last summer she started having a combination of physical and psychological issues that led to a deterioration in her sleep, mobility, cognition etc.

Check with your doctor to see if it's okay for you to increase your dose of fluvoxamine to 50 mg twice a day for 14 days if you get Covid.
You should really get your booster shot NOW. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Hugh truth be known I'm terrified of the vaccines. And now my endocrinologist when reviewing my recent labs has me restricting fluids and wanted me to take a salt tablet cause my serum osmolality was low but my serum sodium which runs low was 134 and normal range starts at 135. This has been the same for years now. I see him for hypothyroidism. But my BP had been as high as 140/90 and this visit was down to 134/74. So I was thrilled with this now what is so bad to have the serum osmolality down about 10 numbers. I felt fine when was there now no so well? So what disease is he trying to create for me. Serum osmolality numbers can be influenced by the amount of water you drink. How much water do you normally drink a day?
That's great news about your BP.
It's understandable that you'd be worried about vaccines. All of the disinformation being spread about vaccines on social media is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands. People get so worried about vaccines that they forget to worry about what the real danger is - COVID.
I have a cousin who is an ICU nurse. He told me that virtually all of his Covid patients have been unvaccinated, and ALL of the patients in his ICU who have died of Covid have been unvaccinated.
I'm glad that you got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in March. This will probably give you at least some protection against becoming severely ill with the Omicron variant. If you would get the Moderna booster or the Pfizer booster or another shot of Johnson & Johnson, you would be a great deal safer than you are right now.

Hugh, during the day one 12oz cup of hot tea, two small sips of water for vitamins, When in the car bottle of green tea was drinking two but cut one out each 17 ounces of liquid and half a bottle of water 12 ounces, after that go ride bike drink nothing till dinner V8 juice (for sodium) 4 ounces of it as don't like it, two sips of water to get mouth clean Then I'd say a full cup of water little at a time till sleep. 12 ounces. Quick total about 60 ounces of water. I never eat salt and diet the same daily due to no taste for 17 years now no specialist knows why other than they speculate some virus attacked the olfactory bulb. So nonfat Greek yogurt with cereal and blackberries, banana for breakfast, one half a sandwich for lunch. Dinner after a few nuts and some dark chocolate consists of white chicken cooked on stove top no fats used, mixes lots of steamed vegtables, and 1/2 sweet potato for dinner. That is exactly the same each day. Thyroid TSH in normal range for my age so meds remain the same dose, all other labs perfect exactly in middle range for BMP. So why is he so adamant about this test. thanks Phillipa
