Gaba safety and interaction question

Posted by Seti on October 15, 2003, at 17:02:10

Anyone heard of any safety problems with gaba? Is it okay to take gaba with effexor? I am having problems with anxiety and sleeping. I took some gaba and valarian root last night and actually got some sleep. I am wondering if this is placebo thought considering other things I have read about gaba on this board. Well any shared info I would appreciate. Thanks.

You need to get on the fish oil and the inositol if you have ocd or panic disorder and forget about the gaba .Too much gaba is bad for you.The fish oil and inositol will really get to the cause of the illness.Deep breathing exercises and self hypnosis plus exposure really help panic disorder.I do not know what you have.I have agoraphobia and I am much better now.

You can use flax seed oil instead of fish oil.Gaba just inhibts brain cells from fireing.I do not know how much is too much but do not take it with xanax. You need to take the flax seed oil for a year.Take 4 or 5 grams a day spaced out. Also take the inositol .maybe some magnesium to.Blueberryleaf extract is the best thing I have used for agoraphobia.it stoped it fast.Do not know why.

I looked up blueberryleaf extract. It seems to be used to help with blood sugar regulation/diabetes? I have heard that some mental illness can be caused by hypoglycemia. I am babbling. Anyway, thanks for the information. I do not take any type of drug for anxiety. I take effexor 150 mg xr for depression and the occasional nadh (5mg) to give me extra energy for my exercise, and ofcourse last night I added some gabba and valarina root to help me sleep. It really does seem to calm my mind. I hope it is safe because I like it.

The problem with GABA is that it doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier in sufficient amounts in supplement form, and so is mostly useless as a mental health supplement. It may be beneficial to levels of human growth hormone throughout the rest of the body, however. If you want to supplement with GABA, try picamilon. Currently, you can really only find it online, but it's wonderful. It's a form of GABA and niacin that crosses the blood-brain barrier -- taking GABA together with niacin will not produce the same effect, just to avoid any confusion.

GABA supplements and picamilon should both be safe enough taken with Effexor, though I have no research to back this up. I can attest that I've taken picamilon with many medications, and still do take it -- never had a problem with any one of them. As for your initial reaction to the GABA + valerian root, I'd have to say that your sleep that night was much more plausibly due to the valerian.
