Calcium:Magnesium ratio

Posted by rianny on November 13, 2003, at 4:03:22

I'm taking extra Magnesium added to multivitamin supplements to deal with my anxiety. My multivita pills contain 175mg of calcium and 50 mg of magnesium. My Calcium/Magnesium (it also contains vita D and some others) is in 2:1 ratio and each pill contains 350mg of calcium and 175mg of magnesium.

I used to take 2 pills of Calcium/Mag, which give me 700mg of calcium and 350mg of magnesium. However, I now take one pill of Cal/Mag because I'm worried about kidney stone.

I read from somewhere that males are likely to develop kidney stones with extra calcium supplement.

I can notice that I feel little relaxed after taking calcium/mag pill, but worried about over-dosage (Is it Mag that makes me feel relaxed or calcium?). Should I get Mag only supplement, and take it without Calcium so I don't have to worry about stones? Also, what would be the best form of mag that I can get. The current one I'm taking is Mag Oxide. I take it before bed, but the relaxing feeling poops out in the morning. It seems like it doesn't last very long.

I used to take SSRI's and Benzo(Klonopin), but I tappered off comepletely since they both make me feel stupid (feels like reducing my cognitive skills). So no drug I'm taking now.

Any comment is welcome =)

Hi rianny,

I'm planning to taper off klonopin. What dosage was you on before starting taper down? Over how long period did you taper? Did you reduce the dose weekly? Was it painful?

Wish me luck :)

There was a thread about this just recently, http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/alter/20031023/msgs/274864.html.

See also on this site previous posts about magnesium...and you will probably hear more than you care to know. ;) Here's one especially interesting by Larry Hoover about maximum oxide. http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20030306/msgs/207021.html

So, if all your sources of magnesium are as oxide, you are getting next to nothing of the potential benefits of magnesium.

Magnesium glycinate (Carlson's brand) is supposed to be one of the most absorbable but if you can't find it, also consider mg citrate or mg malate as they are usually readily available in health food stores. I've tried both and find I prefer malate (and glycinate is my first choice). According to George Eby from this site, http://www.coldcure.com/html/dep.html, magnesium taurate (Cardiovascular Research brand) is the best type, especially in terms of not developing diarrhea at high doses (about 6-800+ mg). I haven't tried it yet, but can tell you that in general, you should space out magnesium to prevent diarrhea.

Some people find magnesium energizing and some relaxing. You will have to experiment to see what feels best and whether it is the calcium or magnesium that you find relaxing. But either way I would recommend additional magnesium supplementation as even adequate dietary amounts (which few people probably achieve) can be reduced by stress.

Note the comments at the end of that article about the cal/mag ratio. The more I read about magnesium, the more I don't understand why we've been pushed toward calcium, calcium, calcium with only a token nod towards magnesium. (I've had a
calcium kidney stone and I can tell you it's not an experience I care to repeat!)

I was not taking Klonopin for a long time. My pdoc recommeneded me to take .5mg in the morning and before bed time, but I found it too sedating. So, I took .25mg in the morning and the same before bed time. I had taken such dosage for about a week. I really wanted to tapper off because it reduced my cognitive skills...simply made me stupid. So, what I recommend is tapper off by reducing dosages, not skipping the time you used to take. It was not that painful for me...just started to feel more anxious, which was just like that before I took the medication =)

Good luck.
