Could I ask a few sam-e questions?

Posted by cherylann on March 24, 2004, at 22:59:03

I'm so glad I found this site and am hoping to get some questions answered.
Does anyone here have any long term experience with sam-e? I've read through previous posts but hadn't seen any long term posts.
I'm currently on 15mg of remeron, tapered down from 30mg. This only partially worked for my depression, but banished the major panic attacks and allowed me to sleep. However, I've gained too much weight and am tired of feeling fat and unhealthy. I will take the remeron for another 3 days then stop. I asked my doc if I could take the remeron and sam-e, but he couldn't really give me an answer. If the sam-e is going to work, I'd like to give it a chance to kick in before I stop the remeron.
I've tried every known AD on the face of the earth and only the tricyclics worked. But, after stopping them due to weight gain, I'd go back on, only to find they didn't work again. Then I'd try another, etc, etc. After reading about alternative therapies, I'm thinking I shouldn't have to be unhealthy to be happy.
Anyone out there have any advice?

Well, unfortunately, I've answered my own question

After 3 days with no meds at all, only sam-e, major horrific panic hit me like a flippin' mac truck. I'll be on sam-e for a week on Friday, but don't think it's going to do much for this panic, and that seems to be my major problem. Can't live too much longer like this, so back on the remeron I'll probably go.
bummer

Hi Cherylann, this is obviously more than a day late and probably more than a dollar short, but thought I'd post just in case you ever start to think -- as I often do -- that you hadn't given something enough of a chance; didn't try the best brand, etc. etc.

Everyone reacts differently to meds or supps obviously, but years back I took sam-e for about two years at least. I used what was supposed to be about the best brand, Nature Made, and ended up going up to what I think was the max, 1600 mg/day. Nothing, nothing, nothing. But I stuck with it that long under the rationale of, "Hey -- what if I would actually have had a total breakdown during this time and the sam-e saved me from that; but instead I'm unaware of that because I was expecting to feel better than my original "baseline"??" Was afraid to change anything and get worse.

But due to the cost and even the annoyance and inconvenience of all the freakin boxes of blister packs, all for nothing, I finally stopped. And never noticed a lick of difference after doing so.

Today I am looking into all the tryptophan posts, and maybe I'll see along the way that you already looked into them too. So far I only saw your comments that you thought it was about the same as 5htp; and that you couldn't obtain it. So in case that's where it ended for you, wanted to tell you that from the bulk of what I've seen from some of the very experienced and chemically knowledgeable posters, many/most seem to find tryp *infinitely* more effective, for whatever reason.

Second, I don't know where you hail from but I'm in the U.S., and see you can easily get it from "veterinary" sites that are pretty much masquerading to avoid culpability under FDA cautions about human consumption. But in reality some of them sell a pharmaceutical grade product. Theirs comes in a powder that's hard to mix though. Second option is to ask your doc -- probably any kind of doc since this is a pretty benign request -- to prescribe it for you in capsules, because it is available by prescription now, in U.S. anyway.

You may already know all that but thought I'd post just in case. : )

This is the end of the thread.
