anybody have luck adding folic acid to lexapro?

Posted by h on June 16, 2004, at 10:36:32

I am doing well on 10 mg of lexapro. Recently I have been wondering if I would feel even better taking a higher dose. Okay, I admit it, I'm a pig for feeling good but after years of GAD and mild depression I love the feeling of not caring so much about every stupid little thing.

Anyway, I'd love to go up to 20 mg but many people report weight gain and such on a higher dose. Would taking folic acid give me increased effect without side effects? Has anybody done this? Please advise.

I haven't done it myself (added folate with an SSRI), but there is good and reliable evidence that doing so both enhances the antidepressant effect, and reduces side-effects.

I think this falls into the "can't hurt, might help" category.

Women are more responsive than men, apparently. 500 mg/day seemed effective in women, but men needed twice that.

I said mg, when the correct version is micrograms (mcg).

Women 500 mcg, men 1000 mcg (or 1 mg).

I figured that out! It's common to say milligrams when you mean micro's.

Am off to the vitamin store. Thanks again.
