serotonin syndrome

Posted by smichael on June 25, 2004, at 17:00:50

I have been taking inositol for ocd and anxiety for one and half months 3 or 4 teaspoons per day. I started taking L gutamine a week ago 1 teaspoon per day. I have read interesting information about 5-htp in combination with inositol. I am concerned about serotonin syndrome. Any information would be helpful.

What have you read about inositol combining with 5-HTP to give serotonin syndrome? It seems pretty unlikely, on the face of it, as 5-HTP doses are usually very small relative to the demand for e.g. tryptophan for serotonin synthesis.

I have read so much over the last few months so I am a little overwhelmed. But I remember reading that you shouldn't mix 5-HTP with some anti-depressants which worried me. I just thought that maybe too much inositol and 5-HTP might not be good. I have also read that 5-HTP reacts differently for different people. I was taking anti depressants for a few years. Then I discovered that my real problems were ocd and anxiety. Anyway...have been taking inositol for a couple of months and glutamine for a few weeks. I am happy with the results. Hopefully the effectiveness won't wear off. have you had good results with inositol? I have also cut refined sugar and most white flour out of my diet.

That only applies to antidepressants which substantially affect serotonin release, destruction, or reuptake.

Yes, but a simple decision as to whether you are comfortable with how it makes you feel will suffice.

Good news!

I only did a small trial of inositol. The doses that are recommended were really outside my ability to budget the expense. I understand inositol can be found at relatively inexpensive prices, but what I had was not cheap.
