Plse help..bad palpatations on 5htp+ssri

Posted by Slinky on August 14, 2004, at 9:34:33

Hi
I have had heart arrithmias for over 10 years.
I changed my lifestyle and they were not so bad.

I have been taking Paroxetine 20mg for about 3 months with no heart problem.
I've recently been taking 5htp 50mg a night because it really helps apathy and anxiety...and depression .My hearts going crazy...but I'm not anxiuos.
I'm pissed because whenever something helps I get a side effect or allergy.
Why shoud 5htp do this?
I know there's probably no answer :(
Should I stop the 5htp and increase paroxetine by 10mg?
Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks.

It's not freakin fair

Given your response to 5-HTP, I strongly suggest taking tryptophan instead. Whatever is going on with the heart rhythm is not going to happen from tryptophan, and it should still work like the 5-HTP. 2-3 grams tryptophan is the suggested nightly dose.

I got mixed up thinking l-tyrosine was tryptophan..I bought tyrosine suppliment- haven't tried it yet -but it also contains 5htp so thats another wasted purchase
I hope I can get tryptophan in uk.

It is prescription only but....

..............
Tryptophan (Optimax, Pacitron) uses an entirely different approach which works by supplementing the amount of serotonin rather than controlling its destruction. Tryptophan is a precursor of serotonin which is able to cross the boundary between blood and brain. Once in the brain, it is converted naturally to serotonin and so overcomes the shortage. It is usually given with a MAOI which slows down the breakdown of serotonin and enhances the effect. In a number of instances tryptophan has been responsible for a serious
blood disorder and it has now been withdrawn except for experimental purposes with named patients who have to be registered, along with their hospital specialist, with the Optimax Information and Clinical Support Unit. The treatment is confined to those with severe and disabling depressive illness of more than 2 years duration which does not respond to standard treatment and only when the tryptophan is used in combination with other antidepressants..
.........
Well I've been ill 20 + years so maybe I could qualify
