I suspect this topic has been discussed before, but anyway, does anybody have any experience of how long L-tryptophan takes to "kick-in", or is it just a gradual process? I am about to start taking it having been unsuccessful with SJW and SAM-e.
Thanks.

Most people respond within 20- 30 minutes of the first dose usually a drowsy ,sleepy feeling, but not neccesarily. As far as an anti-depressant effect or anti-anxiety effect I'd give it a few days. And if you didn't alredy know this,
make sure you take a B-complex,as this will help it convert to serotonin, and 30-45 minutes before a meal.A good sweet carbohydrate snack(no protien) a few minutes after taking it will give it a boost across the blood brain barrier.Good Luck.

Tried it now for a couple of days, it had one curious side-effect, it cured my indegestion, which I though was odd. So I had a friend of mine analyse the so called "99.6% pure L-tryptophan" and it turns out that >50% of it was Calcium Carbonate!!!!
I think I'll send it back.

I don't know why the U.S. won't institute similar legislation, unless it's because the pharmaceutical companies are funding so many politicians' campaigns and retirement plans.

I am in the UK, I ordered it from the US, the manufacturer (or at least the name on the bottle) is FTH Nutraceuticals, claims to have no fillers etc.

I doubt the pharmaceutical companies have anything to do with it. It's the nutrional supplement industry that fights any attempt at regulation in the U.S.
