anyone recommend a reputable, cheap SAMe brand?

Posted by hok on December 2, 2004, at 20:10:25

I've been having seeing some modest benefits lately from adding SAMe to the mix, but the $$ is having some serious damage on my pocketbook. So far, I've tried Walgreens and Nature Made versions, but I'm hoping that I can find something cheaper that still has a good reputation as a brand. any suggestions guys?

Often there are 2 or 3 for the price of one sales on www.puritan.com which offer good value SAMe.

Just as a little note, I don't think brands matter as far as SAMe goes, but you should look for something enteric coated. It breaks down in the stomach and is unused by the body unless it is coated to get past the stomach. SAMe is all SAMe, in comparison to St. John's Wort, where one brand might have very high levels of hyperforin and another brain very low. So for SJW, brands definitely matter, but for a chemical like SAMe, Im thinking its all the same.

However, maybe the methods for coating vary from brand to brand, thus making one brand better than another? I'm not sure.

But, to answer your question, I've used lifetime brand and vitamin shoppe brands. Lifetime is the cheapest I've found.

thanks! (nm)

You know I'm glad you brought up the subject of enteric coated.
I've been noticing a LOT lately that a lot of supps that should (I thought) have been enteric coated (or possibly sublingual) are often not at all.
Eg there is a LOT of SAMe as part of a powder mix..or in a capsule?

All the current digestive enzymes (pancreatic type) are just in a capsule...like the ones that are supposed to be released into the small intestine , not the stomach.
I had a chat to a couple of health food stores about this , but they assure me that the capsules release the enzymes at the right places...taught that in their naturopathy course, sigh...(well according to them)
Also talked to the manufacturers who assure me they work in the intestines and stomach.
I used to be able to..over 10 years ago, buy an enteric coated digestive enzyme tablet...no longer possible a far as I can find in Oz.
the same with P5P..I keep on mentioning brands that are enteric coated..as most are not..

Now am I missing something?
Is it possible for a capsule (like a normal looking capsule) not to break down until the intestines?
I give up with the powder...and no..no little hard coated pellets etc. inside the capsules, just plain powder

Jan
PS with the digestive enzymes it gets even more intersting as they usually mix the stomach enzymes with the intestine enzymes and ASSURE me that each type is released just at the right place...

I think brand can matter, according to Consumer Lab.

Yeah, you're right. That's absurd that they can or would allow 30% of what the label says to be put in a bottle. I guess that choosing a reputable brand is important no matter what.

Walgreens and CVS both often run buy 1 get 1 free of the Nature Made brand, which is the only one I buy and has helped me a lot.

I buy the 36 qty, 400 mg tablets for 39.99.
This is the equivalent of 72 of the 200 mg tabs, and with the free box gives you the same as 144 qty 200 mg tabs. (2) 200 mg tabs are the standard starting dose according to Nature Made. Depending on your dose (I'm up to 1200 mg per day, heading to 1600), this can be very helpful.
