What does anyone think of this?
Double-blind, controlled, crossover trial of inositol versus fluvoxamine for the treatment of panic disorder.
Only 70% of patients respond to current treatments for panic disorder, and many discontinue drugs because of side effects. myo-Inositol, a natural isomer of glucose and a precursor for the second-messenger phosphatidyl-inositol system, has previously been found superior to placebo in the treatment of depression, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but a direct comparison with an established drug has never been performed. A double-blind, controlled, random-order crossover study was undertaken to compare the effect of inositol with that of fluvoxamine in panic disorder. Twenty patients completed 1 month of inositol up to 18 g/day and 1 month of fluvoxamine up to 150 mg/day. Improvements on Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety scores, agoraphobia scores, and Clinical Global Impressions Scale scores were similar for both treatments. In the first month, inositol reduced the number of panic attacks per week (mean and SD) by 4.0 (2) compared with a reduction of 2.4 (2) with fluvoxamine (p = 0.049). Nausea and tiredness were more common with fluvoxamine (p = 0.02 and p = 0.01, respectively). Because inositol is a natural compound with few known side effects, it is attractive to patients who are ambivalent about taking psychiatric medication. Continuing reports of inositol's efficacy in the treatment of depression, panic disorder, and OCD should stimulate replication studies.

This thread might be better on the alternatives board, but I found inositol very useful.

Hi Link,
I know... I guess I was reluctant to post it there because people might miss it. I hoped you'd reply, I remembered you were a fan of inositol!

There was another study about 12g of inositol for depression. I went out to buy some, but discovered that to get 12g you needed like 18 decent-size pills. I hate swallowing pills, so that was the end of that.

The solution to that dilemma is to obtain bulk inositol (saves money, too). Inositol dissolves readily in water, and down the hatch.
You're not likely to find a better price than at:
http://www.beyond-a-century.com/They do not ship to Canada, however. I believe they ship overseas, but not to Canada.

Lar, what does the bulk inositol taste like? With most of the supplements I've found it very difficult to find a form that doesn't make me gag. I find myself abandoning things b/c I get so tired of just trying to ingest them.

Inositol is a sugar is it not? It tastes just like sugar anyway.
I know for a fact that I could probably benefit greatly from high dose inositol. I took 2 grams per day (as much as I could afford) and it certainly had an effect. It is energising and relaxing, it really brightens the mood.
Anyhow, the stuff is very expensive around here, as is SAMe. You have to be rich in order to be well around here.
Inositol SAMe ( SJW) would be a darn powerful antidepressant.

Yes, inositol tastes just like sugar-- not too surprising as i'm pretty certain it is an isomer of glucose.

You can obtain empty capsules fairly readily, and simple devices to help you fill them efficiently. I also get some chocolate soy milk or something similar and just make up a witch's brew in the blender. It isn't too revolting that way.

> TeejayWell, ain't that a b***h. I guess that the shipping of various powders and chemicals is frowned on, with respect to security concerns. Customs officers aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer, and how are they to know that e.g. combining acetyl l-carnitine and inositol might not go boom.
I made use of an American friend for a delivery address, and smuggled a big box o' stuff back into Canada. I do not recommend this, but describe it only for its anecdotal value.

Thanks Larry,
It sounds like bulk inositol should be ingestible for me, and probably better than the capsules. The smell/taste of the clear vegetarian capsules make me want to gag. Haven't yet found a food or taste combo to disguise lecithin granules enough. It's ridiculous. Okay, maybe I need more intense chocolate flavor to do it.

Hi People,
I can't remember if I've already asked this, but for those of you who've benefitted from inositol, how long did it take for you to notice an improvement?
thanks,
