The Essential Woman Organic Oils

Posted by Sarah T. on April 19, 2005, at 20:19:12

When I was at the health food store recently, I saw a product made by Barlean's called "The Essential Woman." It contains organic unrefined flaxseed oil, evening primrose oil, lignans, and soy isoflavones. According to the flyer I picked up, one tablespoon contains 5115mg Omega-3, 2330 mg Omega-6, 1488mg Omega-9, 100mg gamma linolenic acid, 5mg lignans, 45mg isoflavones. Other ingredients include: 2180mg flaxseed particulate, 55mg saponins, 20mg rosemary/ascorbic acid, 9mg protease inhibitors.

Has anyone here used this product? If so, what do you think of it? Aren't those doses of Omega 3, 6 and 9 very high?

The doses aren't high on a tablespoon basis....I wouldn't be taking a tablespoon of it every day, though. I think 1-2 teaspoons is more prudent. Really, flaxseed particulate simply suggests they've ground some flaxseed and added it to flaxseed oil. Then they've tossed in a pinch of soy extract and EPO. The rosemary is antioxidant, and the protease inhibitors are incidental to the other stuff in there. There isn't enough EPO to balance the omega-3, IMHO, and there are better sources for the omega-3 (I still think fish oil is better). Nothing wrong with this if you also take fish oil, IMHO.

Hi, Larry.
Thanks very much for your help. I do take fish oil, but I thought I ought to have some flax oil, too. I've heard that fish oil is more effective for depression.
