omega-3 fats from fish oil is an important natural remedy for mood disorders. I read about a study at Harvard medical school done several years back showing equal effectiveness between mega doses of omega-3 unsaturated fats and lithium or depakote in treating bipolar

Ive read about that study too but I was under the impression that they found it was mainly only effective for depression and not that effective for mania wasnt it?

http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/meds/moodstabilizers.htm is a good site for info on mood stabalizers.

http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/meds/Omega-3.htm is the URL for the fishoil info but i dont think it has any brand names there. So im not really sure which brand is the best.

The Harvard study showed that omega-3 oils were a good augmentor for drugs, but NOT a replacement for drugs.

"The 1999 Harvard study that started it all was conducted on 30 patients with bipolar disorder, generally in stable condition but with a history of relapses (all had experienced bipolar episodes over the past year). All but eight of the subjects were on medications, which were left unchanged. Half the subjects were given 9.6 grams of fish oil capsules, the other half received olive oil."

Hi,

I recently read of a 1990 study of European Psychiatrists, conducted at a Psychiatric hospital, where it was shown Magnesium Aspartate to be as effective as Li Car in many Manic patients.
Both of these have a somewhat shared mode of action in the brain, and i can personally, attest to Mag Asp's effectiveness in being a calming agent.

I have found natural treatments to be very useful as a supplement in a whole range of psychiatric conditions, mostly based on the work done in Chicago in the Pfeiffer Center (www.hriptc.org). My site is at www.omega3.20megsfree.com
