I would say it is used as a memory aid / mild mood lifter / calming agent. I haven't found it's action to be very strong, but if you go to www.sjwinfo.org, you can find some impressive posts that say its great for mood stabilising. Like, effects are noticed after several days use. I don't know how that would occur, biochemically. But I do remember gotu kola improving some aspect of acetylcholine function. A search in google for "gotu kola acetylcholine" would be useful. I don't believe it effects serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine or any of those other well known neurotransmitters. Another study I found showed that it has strong antioxidant effects in the brain which might account for both the cognitive enhancement and the mood stabilization. Gotu Kola and Brahmi are often combined in indian medicine as a sort of "smart herb" combination to improve general intellect. It's a shame more information is not available.

University of Maryland Medical Center has information on it.

It does a lot of things apparently. I wonder how many people with anxiety have tried it. Please post if you have. I've bought and tried so many things in the past, I'm extremely skeptical on everything, but also hopeful something will be found to ease my worried mind.

I googled it along with ".gov" to try to find a government webpage with it. Got other results I'm scanning through now. I'd also scan for ".edu" but google always says
"edu" is a very common word and was not included in your search.
I cannot find the reference, but I think Gotu Kola may, among other things, act as a CCK antagonist. One study showed that it lessened the acoustic startle response. I have just recently started teaching myself about CCK and some of the other more obscure neurotransmitters, and CCK is really interesting in its function.
