Which is your favorite Fish Oil Brand ??

Posted by tepiaca on August 16, 2005, at 12:20:01

Hello , Im planning to take fish oil again.
I am in the possibility to buy it in USA. However I don´t know which brand to buy. I used to buy the GNC brand in Mexico, I needed 6 caps to reach 1mg of EPA.

Which brand do you suggest me to buy in the US ?
What has been the best one for you?

Thank you !
Tep

I have only tried two or three brands. The one I like best is Carlson's. I use the liquid form in a bottle, rather than the capsules. It is cleaper to use the liquid, and Carlson's doesn't have a strong fishy taste at all. (But I always mix the fish oil into a glass of tomato juice anyway. In the tomato juice I don't notice the taste of the oil at all. In fact, I can't tell the difference between a glass of tomato juice that has the oil and a glass that doesn't.)

I agree that Carlson's is a top notch brand overall and have heard many people recommend their fish oil. But I have no reason to think that other common brands such as NOW (which I've taken a lot) are necessarily inferior.

In a previous discussion, some people said that different brands seemed to affect them differently, especially in terms of side effects such as acne so some personal experimentation may be needed. I quit taking my cheapo supermarket brand then but haven't experimented enough subsequently to say for sure that it makes a difference for me.

Some people talk about contaminants by brand but it's my understanding that mercury, PCBs and such are in the flesh not the oil of fish. Studies such as this one have demonstrated the safety of major brands:

http://arpa.allenpress.com/arpaonline/?request=get-document&doi=10.1043%2F1543-2165(2003)127%3C1603:MOMLIC%3E2.0.CO%3B2

I would be comfortable taking fish oil by major brands, such as Source Naturals, Country Life, Enzymatic Therapy, Jarrow Formulas to name but a few. As I said, I've also taken cheapo supermarket varieties.

I haven't actually heard of many posters here sounding especially committed to one fish oil brand over another, which may be why you aren't getting much response to this thread. :)

Some of the brands were have here are Jamieson, Life, Swiss Natural Sources (looks good), and some others.

What should I try?

I need to add something to my paxil for severe clinical depression caused by vitamintosis.

Hi -

for eczema inflammation I like Source Naturals Arctic Pure EPA (500mg EPA 90mg DHA per cap) taken with borage oil.

For depression the cheap NOW concentrated fish oil works fine but I have to take a lot.

Dr Murrays RXomega pills are good value for potency (400/200), but don't seem to have such an effect on eczema as does the SN high EPA pills, which is odd. The SN brand is expensive in comparison - $30 for 120 caps, Dr Murrays - $15 for 120.

I have noticed over the long run (well I'm still less than a year on fish oil) fish oil isn't quite enough to manage all my symptoms, but it sure does potentiate anything else I take so I can take less of other supplements (lithium orotate, SJW, 5HTP for instance).

Eating lots of fish in addition to taking the oil seems to produce a bigger effect than the oil alone, even if large doses are taken alone.

GNC is a recommended brand in the back of Stoll's Omega Connection book - there are only a few. However, he also recommends Nature's Bounty - and I bought a bottle of that over here in Chile and didn't like the taste of the capsules (I always chew them) - they were well within their best before date.

Big brand names have a higher turnover of pills - like NOW and SN - that's my theory anyway - so the oil is 'newer'. The cheapo NOW brand pills always taste really good to me.

Nordic Naturals is pretty good. They have many different varieties and it's the only brand I've found that doesn't give me fish burps.

I've tried many brands and either I get that nasty fishy after-taste, or I can't find one with enough EPA and DHA without having to take six in one day.

I heard an advertisement on the radio for a free sample -- tried it and LOVE it. It has 650 mg EPA and 500 mg DHA per 2 softgels (I take 2/day along with 2 softgels of Ultimate Oil) and it seems to be enough). There is a natural lemon flavor which totally takes care of the fish burps.

The company, Natural Start, offers a free bottle to start (S&H only -- about $3). It's called simply "Omega-3" and claims to be "ultra purified, super concentrated, pharmaceutical grade." The toll free # is 1-800-FISH-OIL; website to try it FREE -- www.naturalstart.com.

Good luck!
