Evening Prinrose Oil - For Men?

Posted by Nickengland on August 27, 2005, at 16:07:49

Hello there,

I know, or think that Evening Primrose Oil is mainly used by women? at least when I go to a well known health store all the Evening Primrose Oil is displayed under a 'womens' section.

What i'm wondering is though, are there any men taking this or who have tried it?

I'm thinking of trying some myself. Wondering whether it will be benefitial and safe to combine with omega 3 fish oil. I understand evening primrose oil is omega 6?

Finally are there any dangers of me taking this with Topamax and Neurontin or more importantly any concern for it being bad for bipolar disorder?

Kind regards

Nick

Apart from the fact you may grow titties and your voice may rise a couple of octaves you should find its fine ;-)

So are you saying this is a bad thing? You know why men don't have breasts right?

Noooooo, I was only joking.

The real side effects of course are sudden urges to shop for shoes or handbags, a desire to spend money on a new hairstyle and worst of all a switch from drinking beer to drinking wine.

Hi Nick,

I'd also be interesting to hear whether EPO can be useful for men (with mental health prolems).

I tried EPO several years ago, at a low dose, I don't remember much about it.

Hey Nick !
i have been taking a small dose, [1 capsule] of oil of primrose, because it is a good source of GLA, which is supposed to be helpful for alcoholics, [i am recovering] and also because i take a hefty amount of fish oil, which is high in DHA, and EPA, [ essential fatty acids]and that can cause an imbalance sometimes in GLA! GLA is an omega 6 fatty acid, usually over-abundant in most peoples diet, but since i am taking so much fish oil, [omega 3]i want to be on the safe side!!
evening primrose oil is also great for arthritis!! a similiar oil is borage oil!!

but from this point on, i am going to keep an eye out for those side-effects TJ spoke of, my girlfriend wouldn't "dig" me as much with breasts, i'm sure, lol!! oh, btw, it is pretty inexpensive..john

Hi John,

Many thanks for your response!

I too take a very high dose of omega 3 everyday, about 3000mg of EPA & DHA omega 3 nutrients..

>i take a hefty amount of fish oil, which is high in DHA, and EPA, [ essential fatty acids]and that can cause an imbalance sometimes in GLA!

Thats very intersting ~ sounds a very wise idea to add the primrose oil then..

>a similiar oil is borage oil!!

I've heard of this one too, is there any real difference between them with regards to the omega 6...would primrose work out better for example compared to borage do you know?

>but from this point on, i am going to keep an eye out for those side-effects TJ spoke of, my girlfriend wouldn't "dig" me as much with breasts, i'm sure, lol!!

LOL

Kind regards

Nick

Hi Nick!!
although a bit cheaper in price, borage oil has more than twice the GLA content of evening of primrose oil. that could be a bit too much omega 6, since we do get alot in our ordinary western diets. but i read also that some people use then interchangeably,i'm not sure why though, maybe boredom, lol!! glad to hear you are using the large dose of fish oil. it is good for so many conditions!! peace...john
