Are these two different animals? Some herb books say one is a name for the other. iherb.com treats them separately yet some sites lump them together.
Both are sometimes called "Brahmi". I even see "Brahmi Ghee" at the local organic grocery store (the building was constructed out of all organic material).
Gotu Kola enlivens the crown chakra - the one just above your head. Bacopa sounds good enough to renew the brain or, perhaps, even grow another. Lab mice actually learned more, were more innovative, and showed more "novelty seeking" behavior.
Anyway, I just bought some Bacopa for the very first time. Got my gel cap on and fixing to see what it has under the hood.

Verne, I think the way it works is that the herbs gotu kola and bacopa when put together make brahmi. Bacopa certainly does something. Worsened my insomnia, even though I've read it promotes deep and restful sleep and more encouragingly is the principal Ayurvedic remedy for insanity. I think it might be dopaminergic. I felt a little speedy on it. I think that gotu kola is a little flat leafy plant that grows in the back yard here. Supposed to be good for arthritis. I should take some.

Declan, I'm hoping the bacopa helps with depression without being too stimulating. Gotu Kola never did much for me. I even tried smoking it. (for being a non-smoker I sure have tried to smoke alot of things)
I'll let you know how the experiments go; iherb shipped it today.

I'm currently taking gotu kola (amongst other things) for haemorrhoids. Will keep you informed.

With all the hype about Bacopa and Gotu Kola I thought I would share my experience.
I've tried Gotu Kola in many forms - even smoking it as recommended by ayruvedic medicine - and noticed nothing remarkable.
A couple weeks ago I started taking Bacopa and, again, didn't notice much at all. It may increase anxiety, but then again, my body seems to react that way to anything new.
Perhaps, the effects are subtle.

When I've tried any of these things I've been on deprenyl which might have made me more sensitive to stimulation.
Bacopa I noticed, sometimes liked it and sometimes not. 6g dose I think.
I assume you've tried rhodiola.
Cordyceps, is that worth a shot?

I liked rhodiola and noticed an anti-depressant effect. I've yet to take it very many times by itself and really test it though.
For a couple weeks I took a combination of rhodiola, relora, COQ, and hoodia (2 caps of each) and felt euphoric at times without any adverse experiences. I really need to take notes. I would make a horrible scientist.
I haven't taken any recently because I've been sidetracked with kratom, albizzia, bacopa, and other herbs. I put it in abeyance on the top shelf with other promising supplements.
About the only way I keep track is a shelf system. Top shelf - very promising, set aside for further "experimentation", fine tuning, or when, oddly, I'm "feeling" better. (the mystery is why not take it now to feel better) I know it works but I'm not sure at what dose or in what combination with other herbs.
The middle shelf holds what I take every day. I just reach in, shuffle from one side to another - kinda like a killer whale thrashing around on the beach for a penguin - and haphazardly ingest a handful or catch of the day.
The bottom shelf is really a box set aside for supplements to which I've reacted badly, yet those I haven't completely given up on. This is really a prolonged way of throwing them away, much like leftovers well-meaningly kept in the fridge for a week only to be discarded. A kind of mourning period with post traumatic buyer's remorse.
I'm still struggling just to stay sober (82 days) so I've put a lot of things in abeyance.

I was given a herb once, the name of which I forget, that was supposed to cut down the desire for alcohol. It seemed to work that way for me.
