Hi there,
Selegiline has been a fantastic drug for my sister but she has a lot of nervous energy from the medication. She is always on the go and finds it difficult to calm down. Just wondering if anyone has had this problem and it went away over time or had a technique how to calm down. She is at 40mg a day, a dose needed to keep her depression at bay. Any suggestions?

If she takes it in the evening, I would suggest some magnesium and vitamin C in the evening.

I'm glad the selegiline is still working for your sister. Selegiline causes tension and anxiety in a lot of people- me included. The transdermal patch, Emsam, is supposed to cause much less of this sort of side effect.
I have used Holy Basil and Kava Kava to counteract the Selegiline tension/anxiety. They work fairly well without making me tired.
Does your sister also have insomnia? Or is it mostly just to much nervous energy?

Hi Ktemene
Tell me about Holy Basil. It's used as an adaptogen isn't it?

This is what I've found out about Holy Basil >
Holy Basil may protect against the toxic effects of excessive Stress
Holy Basil may lower Stress-induced activity of Lactic Dehydrogenase (the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of Pyruvic Acid to Lactic Acid in response to excessive Stress).
Holy Basil may lower Stress-induced excessive activity of Alkaline Phosphatase.
Holy Basil may lower elevated Stress-induced Corticosterone levels.
Holy Basil may help to lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients. Most of the citations I've given above have studies to back them up. Rather large to post here, but should be available on places such as pubmed.com.
I don't know if this helps to indicate whether Holy Basil is an adaptogen. It has plenty of alleged effects on the immune system and metabolism again mentioned in studies.

Thanks, good idea to just grow some and use it with food.
