I am currently trying to wean off of Cymbalta, and while I have always had trouble with obsessive-compulsive behaviors, they are through the ROOF right now! The main ones are: constant nose-blowing, eating sugar, and chewing/peeling the skin off of my lips. I'm wracked with anxiety and can't seem to get a grip on my compulsions. Is there a beneficial alternative treatment for this type of thing, or some sort of behavioral therapy I could try? I have tried to do deep breathing and meditation, but it usually doesn't help that much. Maybe I'm not trying hard enough! Can anyone suggest an herb or supplement that is helpful for OCD symptoms? Thanks for any information! Jess

In reply to compulsions...anything that will help?, posted by jessers11581 on March 31, 2006, at 18:59:06
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) (50 - 200 mg per day) may be an effective treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (according to anecdotal reports).
Tryptophan may alleviate the symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (by functioning as a precursor for the endogenous production of Serotonin).
Inositol and Vitamin B12 can also help
Dilantin (50 - 100 mg per day) may alleviate Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder by normalizing the electrical activity of the Myelin Sheaths of the Brain’s Neurons
Saint John’s Wort (450 mg per day of a product standardized to contain 0.3% Hypericin) may be an effective treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.
Pharmaceutical drugs used to treat OCD include the following >
Clomipramine (Anafranil) is the standard FDA-approved treatment for OCD - usually in high dosages of 200-300 mg per day.
Luvox (Fluvoxamine) - a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor - is believed to be superior to Clomipramine in the treatment for OCD.
Moclobemide may alleviate some cases of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (due to its ability to selectively inhibit the MAO-A enzyme that degrades Serotonin).
Prozac (Fluoxetine) is as effective as Clomipramine (Anafranil) in the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) - Prozac does not produce the side effects associated with Clomipramine in the treatment of OCD.
As you can see from all these supplements Serotonin production is strongly implicated in the etiology of OCD.
This is the end of the thread.
