What does this issue look like? Do medicinal herbs / spices contain substantial levels of pesticides ?

I wonder about this with the Chinese ones that I take. Pollution as well, of course.

Hmmm yeah I have thought about this as well. Obviously, I try and buy organic but often that option isn't available for spices and herbs.
But one thing to note that often the active ingredients in plants that we use are specifically the chemicals that are protective for the plants themselves against insects, being completely eaten etc. so then maybe they don't need the level of insecticides etc that crops would need. Plus the plants used are pretty much how they would occur in the wild, so they would be adapted to living without commerical help. Like St John's wort, camomile, valerian, gingko, lavender etc etc, just grow fine by themselves. But things that man has selectively breed for consumption like lettace, cucumbers etc are much harder to grow - they're tasty to all those insects - so need insecticides etc.
Obviously, alot depends on what type of spice/herb it is. I mean things like lavender and gingko are pretty insect repellent, so I doubt they would need insecticides etc.
Alot of the spices etc are grown in developing countries - I don't know if this means they would use insecidcies etc more or not. Maybe alot of these things are harvested in the wild... I doubt it.But then you never know with commerical farming techniques. I'm sure the giant agri corps have invented some chemical to sell to farmers. Although maybe its a niche market....

Well, I ditched my high dose cocoa consumption based on some reasearch that suggested raw imported cocoa often contains a high level of certain pesticide.
Now if I was only consuming a little, I wouldn't be as concerned but 80g's is a quite a bit.
There is movement to try and ban the pesticide used, but things are slow.

I read in the newspaper today that cheese has 10 times more PEA than chocolate. I don't know how reliable that information is I haven't had time to check it out on the Internet. I don't fancy eating lots of cheese though all that fat content can't be good hehe.

Hey there, well the cocoa we have in our cupboard is organic and is by 'Green and Blacks'
They say on their website that they don't use pesticides on their cocoa plants:

I don't know whether its available in Canada.
Kind regards

No you're right, the content of PEA is higher in other foods. Some chocolate experts think that any psychological effect is due to a combiation of different substances.

Yeah, I'm trying to look for organic cocoa. Although it is probably much more expensive.
I'd have to consume less. Its a good idea though.Linkadge
