Psych visit, confusion about meds vs alternatives

Posted by ichiru on May 17, 2006, at 11:26:30

Hi everyone,
I tend to stick to the alternative section of this board cuz this is where I feel I belong. I consider myself med-phobic, not entirely from personal experience but mostly from reading horror stories on the internet, and having been a member of the Benzo Island which we all know is not a med friendly place; worst case scenarios or not that place has deeply affected my views on meds. My personal experience with ADs so far has been limited to 2 days on Celexa, and 1 week Wellbutrin. I became very agitated on both and my dp/dr got worse. I also started to take more Klonopin to calm down, and that's something I'm not comfortable with in the least bit. There are studies showing that SSRI's can in fact make dp/dr worse, if the problem originates in the temporal lobes; my psych is of course totally dismissive of that "theory". He is now literally pissed that I once again gave up on Lamictal without giving it a full run. He also went off on the dangers of herbal "natural" remedies, and how I'm delusional to think it's any safer than Rx drugs.

My question, should I suck it up and force myself into a full 8 weeks trial of Lexapro that I'm not comfortable with? Or based on your personal experience with meds and seeing how you're trying alternatives, should I just dump my psych? ;)

I've been wondering this with posts I've read and my experience with moclobemide and Parnate. It's always said 'give it a fair trial', but like you, I've been reluctant to continue with something that just seems to be making things worse. But I've started tianeptine and that felt OK from the beginning. It has minimal side effects and the bits you don't like really do feel like side effects.
You might expect your response to Lexapro to be similar to your response to Celexa?
I don't suppose you can expct your doctor to be sympathetic or knowledgable about alternatives; it is natural for him to see them as inneffective or dangerous. But what would you take if you didn't keep up the Lexapro? SAMe? Fish Oil? 5htp? deprenyl?

that's just it, I don't expect Lexapro to be much different from Celexa, and that made me jittery like on 5 shots of espresso, grinding my jaw like I've been sniffing cocaine. Should I *really* allow my body to adjust/get used to that?

Yes, I am thinking Fish Oil (apparently I haven't been taking nearly enough), Skull Cap, 5-htp and/or SJW. I recently bought the Linden Method, and as much as I've been skeptical about the "9 pillars", and have made fun of the method (before knowing anything real about it) I'm now more than ever convinced that Rx meds are not the answer for me...but I need my psych to get me off Klonopin, and that's just yet another area where he goes totally berserk.

As far as getting off Klonopin is concerned Skullcap is useful. Also Chinese Medicine things...I think it's An Shen Zhi Di Wang, but it might be a little different. I've substituted both for Valium 2.5mg.

You probably know this anyway, but I wouldn't combine SJW (or 5htp for that matter) with prescription meds..... perhaps thats what made you jittery when you took celexa?
