Looking for a natural alternative to MAOI's

Posted by crw on May 20, 2006, at 20:01:44

Hi, This is my first time posting.

A bit of my history. I've been treated with MAOI's in the past for agoraphobia and depression. I started with Nardil a few years ago after many med's were determined to be less than effective. The Nardil began to loose it's positive effects on my social anxiety after a few months. I was then given Parnate. I used Parnate off and on for the last two years. Parnate worked great but also stopped working after a few months. I would take a month break and start the drug again. But every time I did this my tolerance of the drug would become obvious in a shorter amount of time , until it only worked for a week or so.

So goes my question. I've heard that there are some natural MAOI's. I'm interested in some of the ingredients used in a brew called ayahuasca. But I don't want to create a hallucinogenic mix.

Are there any other natural alternatives that I might be missing.

Thanks,
Chris

Turmeric is one of the strongest natural MAOI's I know of.

There is also St. John's wort, which may work via a mixture of monoamine oxidase inhibition and monoamine uptake inhibition.
