Flaxseed Oil Capsules

Posted by verne on April 8, 2006, at 21:47:20

Anyone else notice rectal irritation - even inflammation - after taking flaxseed oil capsules? In fact, anything in a dark gelatin capsule seems to cause this reaction. Vitamin E, lecithin, GLA, CLA, etc... How can they be? I thought all this stuff was good for me?

Would my butt lie to me?

For me it's just a difficulty in absorbing the oil. Deficient bile acids? I have to be careful with large oily capsules for just the reason you mention.

No problems with my experience - 1200 mg capsules.
Noticable improved mood with the use.

No butt problems here :-) Maybee your oil is rancid :-) Please make sure your oil is cold-pressed. My experience is that too much flaxseed oil (>15 ml) will cause insomnia and confusion.

Yes, and/or deficient stomach acid. Your body cannot absorb triglycerides, the way fats come in food. You need stomach acid to hydrolyse the triglyceride to free fatty acids and glycerine. They are absorbed separately, and then your liver reforms triglycerides from there.

Bile salts are emulsifiers for free fatty acids. If they (fatty acids) aren't free, though, bile does no good.

Rancid oil would cause stomach gas.....foul vapours. You can't mistake rancid fat. Rancidity only applies to unsaturated fats, and flax is full of polyunsaturates. That is why you take it. If it's rancid, though, there is no mistaking it.

Always take fat supplements with your heaviest meal of the day, preferably one with other fats in it. Stomach acid alone can cause polyunsaturated fatty acids to go rancid. So, never ever take them on an empty stomach.

maybee rancid is the wrong word but I have noticed that some brands will cause me confusion and insomnia while some brands will not.

There is a vast difference in the fatty acid content of different flax varieties. There is no standard flax oil. It all depends on the seeds being pressed.
