I'm hoping that I'd be able to get some treatment for depression. I'm not taking anything right now, except some fish oil and multivitamins/minerals.
I'm hoping that they'd be able to tell me if I can combine some various herbs that I'm interested in - namely gingko, SJW and perhaps rhodiola. I emailed one herbalist, and she hasn't used rhodiola before, which is abit strange if you wask me. I'm pretty intersted in using this herb.
I have a feeling that I'll have to take the herbs from the herbalist - well, I'm pretty certain I want to go back onto SJW, but I'll only take kira. And I want to know what herbs I'm going to be taking.
Oh well.
Anyway it only costs £36 ($50?) for an hour and a half, so its worth a shot anyway.
I got the name from the 'national institute of medical herbalists' website here in the UK.
Anyone have any experiences with herbalists?
Kind regards
Meri

Hi Merri
Herbalists all over the place here. Naturopaths and TCM people. I've been seeing them and taking their stuff for 5 years, maybe. Depression though is difficult (I think, anyway).
Do I recall correctly that you did not mind reboxetine? That it made you feel less panicky in a panicky situation?
(I've always assumed I'd not react well to it, having NE overactivity, but that's purely guesswork.)
Do you have an opinion on hyperforin vs hypericin? When I tried SJW I got the sun reaction thing. Too much sun in Australia anyway, and difficult to avoid. I wondered if hyperforin SJW would be less likely to cause the light sensitivity.
I've taken TCM herbs for years for allergies and depression, and they have been better for the allergies than the depression. I'm having some success with tianeptine right now. Better sleep in particular.
If sleep is not an issue and you need a lift, rhodiola would be worth checking out.

Hi Declan,
> Do I recall correctly that you did not mind reboxetine? That it made you feel less panicky in a panicky situation?Yep, completely got rid of panic for me. Although having said that, it was like I was pumped up from taking the reboxetine and when I'd have a situation where I was going to panic, I just didn't, because I was already sort of pumped up. If you get what I mean!! I could feel the adrenaline being fired, but it didn't cause me to react somehow. It was a weird feeling!!
> (I've always assumed I'd not react well to it, having NE overactivity, but that's purely guesswork.)
How do you know that you have NE overactivity (if you don't mind me asking?)
> Do you have an opinion on hyperforin vs hypericin?
Not really - I've read that they orginally thought that the benefits came from hypericin, but now they think its more hyperforin. That all I know about the two, I'm afraid. I'm sure it must be a combination of the two or other compounds in the plant.
>When I tried SJW I got the sun reaction thing. Too much sun in Australia anyway, and difficult to avoid. I wondered if hyperforin SJW would be less likely to cause the light sensitivity.
Fortunately for me, it was winter when I tried it, and well, the UK/Finland ain't too great for sunshine in the depths of winter!! I wonder if it'll have an effect in summer on me? I'm white, but I don't tend to burn too easily (unless I'm stupid) I don't know if that makes a difference!!

> If sleep is not an issue and you need a lift, rhodiola would be worth checking out.Sleep is definately not an issue with me, thankfully. If anything, I tend to go the other way. I'm seriously thinking about rhodiola. I really need a lift!! Would you be able to tell me anything more about it?? Can you combine it with SJW? I assume so. Do you need breaks from it, like with other adaptogens? Also, where do you buy it from? I'm having abit of trouble getting hold of it to be honest!!
Thanks Declan!
Kind regards

How do I know that I have overactive NE? Good question. I've been sweaty and jittery? I don't like Sudafed? All of the other neurotransmitters are more interesting? Clearly I have no idea.
OK, with Rhodiola. I'm copying this from a printout from my doc.
Metabolism.
Rhodiola has antioxidant properties, lowers elevated glucose in Type1 diabetes, enhances production of energy via oxidative phoshorylation, shortens recovery time after exercise, prevents fatigue and hypoglycemia and increases stamina.Nervous system.
Improves attention span, concentration, hearing ability (increases air and bone conduction on speech tones), improves mental function and memory, influences (?) and enhances the hypothalamus and prevents stress.
Gosh. You must be wondering why you aren't taking it already,or what kind of a doctor I have. Anyway there must be something to it. The only problem I see with it is this: My wife sleeps really well (She didn't notice deprenyl), yet after 2 or 3 days of rhodiola she started to get a flickery sleep. But we're all different. It grows at the other end of the continent to Finland. Arctic root, golden root.

Hiya Declan!

Yeah I have hunch thats its a dopamine thing with me (sertonic and noradrenlic drugs don't really do anything fantastic for me) although I have no idea to be honest! I mean, the brain is so complicated, only something more complicated than a brain can understand it *all*!!

Hmmm, very interesting, thanks for the info!! Seriously, I'm going to try it, I'm hoping it'll do something! And I'm hoping that the medical herbalist will have heard of it too. But I'm not holding my breath as one I'd emailed previously didn't use it rather surprisingly. I've ordered the "The Rhodiola Revolution" too.
Well we'll see I guess.Anyway hope you're alright down in Oz!!
Kind regards

Yeah, Hi Merri
Somewhere here there were posts about social phobia involving underactive GABA and dopamine and overactive NE, which sounded like a nice combination.
If I got the effect of deprenyl, bromocriptine, cabergoline and mucana and divided it by something and subtracted the effect of tyrosine I was left with something I wanted more of.
Or if I got the effect of moclobemide and subtracted the effect of deprenyl I got something that seemed like a strain.
Or if I got the effect of Parnate and subtracted the effect of 5htp I got something better.
Not to speak of Xanax plus Dexedrine.
I suppose I was thinking along those lines.
All the best

Hey there Declan!
Sorry, I forgot about this post! I'm terrible at doing that.
Anyway,
> Not to speak of Xanax plus Dexedrine.
I would rather like to try this combo....due to the crappy strict rules here in the UK, I've never ever tried a benzo or a stimulant. Oh well.
Hows the tiantipine (sorry can't spell) working out?? I hate the SSRIs so haven't considered anything purely sertonin, but well, this looks interesting!!
Kind regards

Yeah you pretty much get SSRI drugs from the doctors here for anxiety, depression , panic disorder, you name it they seem to want to give you SSRI drugs.
However I have tried Benzo drugs such as Xanax, Temazepam and Diazepam, both legally and illegally. Obviously I dont advise obtaining them without prescription. They work extremely well against anxiety but they won't help you recover well that's my opinion anyway, I usually have one pill in my pocket as security in case some vicious panic attack hits me. However because I only have one I resist all the time in taking it and ride the attack out.
My doctor will prescribe diazepam (valium) to me very occasionally if I'm going for a job interview or similar stressful event. Doctors especially in the UK are on very strict guidelines with Benzos and that's understandable to some extent.

Pick one herb. Titrate that dose. Then slowly introduce one of the others. That's when you start low, and go slow. Interactions can sneak up on you. How do you catch a unique rabbit? You neak up on him.
I wouldn't overplan.
Just start the experiment, and we'll walk through it with you.
