Foods containing least pesticides

Posted by linkadge on June 29, 2006, at 17:16:29

Does anyone know if anybody has compiled a list anywhere that provides some kind of summary on the comparitive content of pesticides in foods?

Thanks,

Hi,
I am so glad I am finally able to answer a question on this site!
Here is a list of pesticide residue in fruits and vegetables:
http://www.foodnews.org/fulldataset.php
You can read about how they compiled the list here:
http://www.foodnews.org/methodology.php
It seems the facts are from 1992-2001, but I am sure they are still relevant to some degree.
Here, they break down the results for you, with the worst and best fruits nad vegs.:
http://www.foodnews.org/reportcard.php
Hope this helps!
Liz

Thanks a lot for that information.

I am wondering for certain foods such as banannas/potatoes, wheather removing the skin/peels reduces/eliminates pesticide exposure.

Apples seemed to be high on the list, I am wondering if washing them removes any of the pesticide residue.

hi Link,
if it's summertime where you live, it's a great time to find a farmer's market. You can usually find fresher and more organic produce for a great price. It's nice to eat produce that's actually ripened under the sunshine.

Here http://www.foodnews.org/reportcard.php it says:
"What about washing?

Washing will not change the rank of the fruits and vegetables in the Guide. That's because nearly all of the data used to create these lists comes from the USDA Pesticide Data Program (PDP) where the foods are washed and prepared for normal consumption prior to testing for pesticides (apples are washed and cored, bananas are peeled, etc.).

While washing fresh produce may help reduce pesticide residues, it clearly does not eliminate them. Nonetheless, produce should be washed before it is eaten because washing does reduce levels of some pesticides. However, other pesticides are taken up internally into the plant, are in the fruit, and cannot be washed off. Others are formulated to bind to the surface of the crop and do not easily wash off. Peeling reduces exposures, but valuable nutrients often go down the drain with the peel."

Yeah, thats what I was afraid of. Geez, you'd think they'd get smarter than this.

I just try as much as possible to buy organic food, even if it is abit more expensive. And I also try to buy certain vegetables and fruit organic for sure as well as milk and cheese and yoghurt. Salad leaves are a definate organic buy, and apples and soft fruit and carotts. But obviously, if you're out eating in cafes etc, it isn't possible to get organic salads. But then, you have to put it into perspective - the benefits of eating the unorganic fruit/veg in terms of cancer protection etc probably outweighs the negitive effects of pesticide exposure. If you kind of see what I mean. And actually, I have read studies that actually show that the body needs a healthy brace of toxicity to keep it in check. But well, even so, I'd rather keep my pesitcide exposure to an absoulte minimum. Grrrr I think all food should be organic!! I just shiver when I eat unorganic chicken for instance - those chickens are pumped full of growth hormones, antibiotics etc etc. Unfortunately, organic chicken is really expensive here. Yeah, read "not on the label" - I had to stop halfway through, I just couldn't bear reading it.

Kind regards

Meri
