Brand of supplements-which to buy?

Posted by LizinManhattan on June 15, 2006, at 16:51:14

Does anyone have an opinion about which brand of supplement to buy? I buy mostly Nature Made because it has the USP label http://www.usp.org/ and I figure some certification system is better than none. Sometimes Consumer Reports will test supplements and find that some have much less of the ingredients than claimed, so there are obviously bad supplements out there.
Thoughts, anyone?
Thanks!
Liz
P.S. Are supplements in Canada certified by any organization/body/group?

Sorry, I am new at this and don't have any advice. But to expand your question; could people also give advice on where to buy supplements.

I personally am looking for a quality brand Mag. Glycinate and L-theanine. I would prefear to order them from the same location. So if someone could give experience with different products from different sites it would be very much appreciated.

I would recommend Carlson's for magnesium glycinate. Carlson's in general is an excellent brand. You can find it at Vitamin Shoppe or Amazon (from Vitamin Shoppe).

I usually shop at iherb (now called PapaNature). I've had very good service from them and although I'm not familiar with all of their brands, most of them are ones I consider reputable such as Source Naturals, Enzymatic Therapy, Natural Factors. Their prices are good too though sometimes you can find something on sale at Amazon.

The Vitamin Shoppe is another place I use.

I avoid buying supplements in grocery stores or the like unless it's something simple like Vitamin C.

If price is not a consideration, I'd recommend Life Extension Foundation products.

If you want to pay to join, Consumer Lab does testing of brands for ingredients: http://www.consumerlab.com/index.asp

Thanks, I went to the Vitamen Shoppe and looked for the Carlson's brand but could not find magnesium glycinate. So I ordered Kal brand.

Again thanks for the reply.

They do have it there:

In the past KAL brand of magnesium glycinate would not be one I'd recommend but it may be ok these days as I heard from my local health food store owner that KAL was bought out by Solaray and forced to upgrade their products to Solaray standards.

If it doesn't do what you'd like, you might want to try another brand though.

I used to take magnesium glycinate but switched to magnesium taurate as it's less sedating and also less likely to cause diarrhea in larger amounts for me.
