Ephedra and other alternative energizers

Posted by purplesky on August 12, 2006, at 18:35:23

I'm suffering from lack of energy, motivation, oversleeping, and a general sense of apathy. I'm neither sad nor suicidal, just lacking a will to get out of bed. Several years ago I started using an over-the-counter supplement with ephedra and caffeine in it. Aside from being sweaty and jittery, I actually felt more passionate and motivated to do things. It wasn't a cure by any means, but I felt a lot better than I had in a long time.

Since the crackdown on ephedra, I find it hard to find ephedra. I finally found some but it was mixed with guaifenesin. I took it and found that it caused weakness, light-headedness and drowsiness instead of motivation and wakefulness.

Does anyone know if you can still buy ephedra in a pure form or mixed with caffeine? Or, do you know any herbs and alternatives that work in a similar way that might be easier to find?
I notice that massive amounts of caffeine (downing espresso shots like there's no tomorrow and taking green tea pills) makes me jittery and awake but not with a real DRIVE to do anything. I don't just want to be unable to sleep, but to have motivation to go outside of my bedroom and do something with my life.

Any suggestions?

YOu could try b12 in the morning. You could also try SAMe (it is energizing).

You may want to start your day with a high protein breafast plus regular old java.

you might try yerba mate
it makes a nice tea, kind of astringent with a good flavor (also great mixed with mint or fruit herbal teas). widely available, not too expensive. you can even make it in your coffee maker if you want.

it contains an alkaloid (matein) that has stimulant properties without quite as much peripheral adrenergic effect as coffee. (not so much jitters)

Also, some people react to strong black tea better than to strong black coffee. the theobromine in tea might be a better stimulant for your body

personally, I use provigil, which I got a script for after suffering from really bad sleepiness as a result of my antidepressant regimine...

best of luck to you

I'm desperate to find alternative energizers
since I'm sick of being tired and lazy all the time!

If you want to speedy alternative to ethedrine then Benzylpiperazine pills are fairly freely available.
Not sure how safe it is in the long term, but its probably safer than Ephedra.

Good old Adrafanil is another standby, its fairly cheap.
I would take it again but I'm on Nardil & I've heard of people having problems.

Have you got any other energy products to recomend Link?

Is Adrafinil available in the US, or just Provigil (which costs an arm and a leg)? I'm uninsured and between psychiatrists right now.

I've never heard of benzylpiperazine, where would I find it? Is that something I'd find at GNC or a natural food and herb store or what?

If I could only get the energy and motivation to leave the house, I'm THIS CLOSE to finally graduating college and having a good job!

Oops, I should have googled before I asked that last question. Apparently BZP is a schedule 1 substance in the US (next to crack cocaine and heroin), yet still available in most of the world.
