Rhodiola help

Posted by Mcanxious on November 18, 2006, at 18:53:41

hi

i have been taking this herb for 8 days now and my experince so far hasnt been great, i am currently taking it to ease my social anxiety + depression. The first day was fantastic very pro social, happy, lifted mood e.t.c.

unfortuantly this didnt last but have had one semi good day since, the rest of the time i have been either numb or with highten anxiety. I was wondering if people had any idea how long this takes to kick in or is it possible that the anxiety will never abate on this herb. I understand every one is different but just wanted to know any one elses experince.

i am currently using 100mg of new chapters rhodiola rosea.

cheers

I tried rhodiola last year. I got strong nervousness and panic attacks from it. I couldn't make it past day 2.

I used it many years ago when it wasn't even available in the USA yet. I mailordered it from overseas. I don't remember much about it. Something must not have been right though or I would have remembered or would still be on it.

Rhodiola made me pretty anxious after a few days as well, which is why I stopped taking it.

I did get some excellent Rhodiola advice from Meri-Tuuli in a recent thread, however:

I've been doing a ton of research on rhodiola. According to realworld experiences at swjinfo.org it gets good reviews. One person found it worked better than 6 other brands. It is the good stuff from the corrent region of Siberia.

Apparently it is tricky to dose. Too low of a dose is stimulating, a higher dose is more calming, but too high of a dose is agitating. I know it sounds weird, but you might actually want to try 2 a day instead of one. You could also consider another brand. And to get through the start-up period for a few weeks you may need to find yourself something to add to it for calming until it kicks in.

Hi

Could you direct me to the place where it says about higher doses being calming? It made me quite anxious in the evenings.

Also, apparently, New Chapter Rhodiolaforce is very good. But yes, by all means try a different brand - Ameriden are supposed to the 'gold standard'.

You got the book by Pat Brown etc? Its very good.

Kind regards

Meri

Two things I would suggest would be to take 1 cap in the morning and then one cap in the early afternoon. I have read that Rhodiola may begin to wear off in about 6-8 hours so split dosing may give you better stability wrt blood levels. The other suggestion would be to jump up to the 300mg. dosage by New Chapter. That is what I take currently after starting with the 100mgs. size.

Rho was at first stimulating for me but I don't know how much of that was the herb itself since I was taking SJW when I started it. After about a week I discontinued the SJW and kept up with the Rho and found it did the job just fine all on it's own. I did notice that after about two weeks of taking it I lost the stimulant effect which I personally enjoyed but I still was getting a lot of great benefits from it so I continued it but bumped up to the 300mgs. which I am taking now.

good luck

Hey Tenman, what was your sleep like before rhodiola, and what was it like after? Rhodiola seemed great to me, except for the sleep angle.

Rhodiola+deprenyl citrate was really good for me, but naturally I couldn't sleep. Even so it was good, euphoric really.

hi guys

thanks for the replys i must admit i have had quite a good day today on the Rhodiola very little anxiety, if any. i guess i just felt well normal which in its self was a very strange feeling i did however add 500mg a niciamide so dont know what is doing what. Niciamide normally makes me very depressed.

i am going to cut the nicimide when i am not at work and see if this makes a difference. I am impressed with the amount of energy i have since started the rhodiola.

Hi Declan, Rhodiola has if anything improved my sleep. I sleep fewer hours per night (around 6 now vs. 8) but I wake up feeling refreshed and I have been able to cut my caffeine intake substantially.

How was Rho by itself for you? Perhaps a combination of Rhodiola in the mornings and Ashwaganda which is more sedating in the evenings would work for you?

My latest experience with ashwaganda confirms someone's (Nolvas?) experience to some extent.
He found it agitating. I didn't find that, but it disturbed my sleep, as just about anything does.
Otherwise I'd take it all the time.

Interesting, this sleep business, especially as you get older.
