I'm sitting here looking at a bottle of aspirin

Posted by madeline on November 21, 2006, at 7:52:18

And I start thinking, when does a drug STOP being herbal and START being more mainstream.

Aspirin started as an herbal product. The active compound from willow bark was isolated, purified and then synthetically produced. But the drug itself originated in plants.

The same could be said for penicillin, coumadin, morphine, taxol etc...

And yet each of the drugs is considered mainstream.

I wonder, where that line is drawn?

Any ideas?

Well logic follows then once it is FDA approved, mareketed and sold for a hefty profit.

Do you consider that to be a bad thing?

Once you make health claims it is not "herbal"; the difference between the laws conserning foods vs drugs.
