Whey Protein Powder for Depression?

Posted by blueberry1 on December 25, 2006, at 6:32:05

I might try some Whey protein powder. Unlike amino acid capsules, Whey has a good balance of tyrosine and tryptophan, along with the whole army of other amino acids. I was reading at one website that said supplementing with individual amino acids is partially correct but partially flawed, in that there are many more neurotransmitters and stuff going on that need help besides just serotonin or dopamine.

It kind of makes sense on paper, but you know how that goes. :-(

Anyone ever taken Whey protein powder?

This is protein powders, hey? The idea has been to maintain an adequate protein intake. Currently I take a rice based one. Do they help? Maybe.
With pyridoxal 5 phosphate as well, perhaps.

I take in around 80 grams of protein a day in the form of whey to supplement whole food protein intake for my exercises. I have never noticed an effect on mood but that's not to say it's not doing anything. Good luck.

Judging from the responses so far it doesn't sound like whey protein powder or any kind of protein powder is much of a benefit to mood. I might try some anyway but at least I know not to expect anything. With my luck I'll notice myself getting worse.

Proteins is the most efficient nutrient to decrease hunger. So if high protein diet leads to lower intake of carbohydrates it could stabalize your mood and improve insulin sensitivity. Unfortunately many people get a sense of low energy from low carb diet, especially in the beginning.

Most proteins from a high protein diet is transformed into fat and carbohydrates, not transmittors.

So if you are having problems with OCD and food intake Whey Protein Powder could be of some help, otherwise no.

I have taken whey protein, I specifically took it whilst weight training and to combat anxiety. Really you need one that contains a decent quantity of alpha lactalbulmin. This thread will provide more information >

I stopped whey protein after a few months and went on to take Inositol for 3 months. Sadly neither did me much good in quelling my anxiety, and Inositol was pure hell.

I wonder if lactoferrin (iron depleted?) contains tryptophan and can be good for mood?

It's in whey protein powder?

It's very good for the gut and the immune system.

One of the best supplements I've taken, but expensive.

Lactoferrin also one of my favs.

Isn't it used to bind or transport iron or somehing? I've no idea what would caus it to be formed in body?
.. only its a feel good supp(probably via reducing oxidation , free radical stuff) and its in some whey type powders I think
not any help really
