Not Liking SAMe

Posted by blueberry1 on December 26, 2006, at 17:18:31

Darn. You know, SAMe sounds pretty good and some people really like it. For me it is feeling very weird and I am not liking it.

First day 200mg. After a couple hours I felt sort of dazed, more depressed, more withdrawn, and by the evening I was crying and very depressed. I hadn't been that depressed in a while.

Second day 400mg. I felt a noticeable improvement. Warmth, comfortable, depression lifted somewhat.

Third day 400mg. Getting more depressed, more withdrawn. Feeling foggy, dizzy, confused, disconnected, tired, and it's odd but I feel calm but at the same time I feel nervous. Weird. The foggyness and the nervousness worry me the most. Overall it just feels very uncomfortable and like something is not cool with this. Sleep was aweful. Woke many times and noticed I was drooling a lot. Had to wipe my mouth several times.

Today 200mg. Again, very foggy disconnected calm but nervous. Strange feeling. I'm not liking it.

The only other things I take are in such tiny doses that I don't see an interaction. I could be wrong. The SAMe dose itself is pretty low. Maybe I only should take 50mg or 100mg, or none at all.

150mg sjw
100mg lithium orotate
450mg epa/100mg dha fish oil
1.25mg zyprexa
???mg SAMe

Next step tomorrow is to switch sjw brands. Going from Kira to Perika. Will take 600mg right from the start no matter what. In a clinical study head-to-head against Paxil, in which Perika did better than Paxil, there was no difference between 600mg and 1200mg.

After that, maybe a little sample of Licorice, Ginseng, and some calming herbs.

After that if there is no decent success, I'm afraid the old ssri+benzo+antipsychotic thing is unavoidable.

I was SO hoping for SAMe.

Some of this stuff might be interacting.

I have heard a number of cases of dysphoria associated with the combination of SJW and SAMe.

I know you're not taking a whole lot of SJW, but it might be benificial to just test the SAMe alone without SJW or lithium.

I remember that b12 on its own was ok, but when I mixed b12 with lithium I got all sorts of strange sensations. Irritable, sweaty, panicy, headache etc.

I also remember that SAMe precursors worked well on their own, but produced dysphoria when I mixed with SJW.

SAMe can increase brain serotonin content, as can lithium. SJW can also affect serotonin levels.

Take care.

Try not to experiment with to many substances at the same time. It will be difficult to conclude what ever benefits/side effects you will encounter.

It usually takes two weeks before any AD kicks in since transmitters are made in the cell body and have to be transported along the axon in order to be released at the synapse. This process takes approximately two weeks.

My experience is that SAMe shift mood disorder from depression to anxiety, most likely due to increased epinephrine. There are many sites claiming Same will increase dopamin and serotin as well but in theory there is no support for these claims since no methylation is involved in the the synthesis of these transmitters.
